'Cats Tie #7 Maine 2-2; Win Shootout in Preseason Scrimmage

Oliver and Lavins score for the ‘Cats
BRUNSWICK, Maine – Freshman forward Sam Oliver (Saint John, New Brunswick) and junior alternate captain Marty Lavins (Riga, Latvia) each scored for the Wildcats as the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team tied No. 7 Maine, 2-2, on Friday evening in front of a sold out crowd at Sidney J. Watson Arena on the campus of Bowdoin College in a preseason Border Battle presented by Buffalo Wild Wings. After a scoreless overtime, UNH won the shootout, 2-1, as junior forward Nick Ring (Hingham, Mass.) scored the winner.
Senior goalie Kyle Chauvette (Goffstown, N.H.) made 16 saves for the Wildcats.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The 'Cats took a 1-0 lead at 6:04 of the first period when Oliver sent a wrister from the faceoff circle to the back of the net for the power play goal. Freshman defenseman Nick De Angelis (King City, Ontario) and senior alternate captain Cy LeClerc (Brentwood, N.H.) each posted an assist on the goal.
- UNH extended its advantage to 2-0 at 17:54 of the second as Lavins knocked in a pass by junior forward Jason Siedem (Madison, N.J.) for the power play goal.
- Just 17 seconds later, the Black Bears cut the deficit to 2-1 with a goal by Simon Motew who scored on a shot from the blue line.
- At 11:11 of the third period, Maine tied the contest as Max Scott scored stick side.
- The shootout started with a save by Chauvette on a shot by Lukas Peterson, while LeClerc gave UNH the 1-0 lead with a goal.
- With the shootout now tied at 1-1, Ring found the back of the net to give the Wildcats the shootout win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- UNH outshot Maine, 38-18.
- The Wildcats went 2-5 on the power play, while the Black Bears went 1-5.
- Chauvette made 16 saves, while for Maine, Albin Boija posted 17 and Mathis Rousseau recorded 19.
