BELGRADE, Serbia - University of New Hampshire women's soccer alumna Sally Rainey '25 has signed with Red Star Belgrade who are the two-time defending champions of the Serbian Women's Super League.
Rainey's signing marks a milestone for UNH women's soccer as she is now the 10th player in program history to turn professional starting in 2016.
"I am so excited and grateful for this opportunity to begin pursuing a dream I've had since I was a kid," said Rainey. "I would not be here without the continuous support of my family, my coaches, my teammates and everyone else I have met along my soccer journey. I am looking forward to growing as both a player and a person as I move into this next chapter of my career."
A native of West Lebanon, N.H., Rainey had a highly decorated career as a Wildcat as she was named the America East Goalkeeper of the Year in 2023 and 2024, becoming the first UNH player and just the fourth in conference history to earn back-to-back honors. She also was a two-time All-Conference First Team selection, earned United Soccer Coaches All-Region Second Team (2024) and Third Team (2023) accolades and was selected to play in the 2024 NEWISA Senior Bowl.
"Yet another milestone achieved for Sally," said UNH women's soccer head coach Steve Welham. "She is undoubtedly in the upper echelon of UNH women's soccer's all-time greats (a great player, a great student and most of all a great person). This is so special as she is realizing a dream that started many years ago as a young child and has shown the courage and commitment to make this a reality. She will be able to play Champions League football and take in a brand-new culture in one of the most historic and scenic countries in the world. So, your journey continues Sally! Keep it going…we are all behind you and very proud of all that you are doing!"
Rainey left her mark in the UNH history books as she set the program record for lowest career goals-against average (0.78), ranks fourth all-time in shutouts (17) and holds the fifth-best save percentage in school history (.823). In 2024, she tied the single-season school record with nine shutouts and played every minute of all 18 matches while helping lead UNH to 12 wins, which tied the program record as the Wildcats advanced to their third America East Championship game in four years. Rainey was also a member of the 2022 team which won the America East Championship.
Rainey, who was the Co-President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, was the recipient of UNH's Cathy Coakley Student-Athlete Community Involvement Award in 2025. She was also stellar in the classroom as a two-time Chi Alpha Sigma inductee and America East Presidential Scholar. Rainey earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a 3.86 GPA. She was named to CSC Academic All-District Team, United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-East Region First Team, Scholar All-America Second Team and the America East All-Academic Team.
