Men’s Hockey Takes Down #10 UConn, 4-3

Skrastins scores game winner
STORRS, Conn. – Senior forward Kristaps Skrastins (Grobina, Latvia) scored the game-winning goal in the third period as the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team defeated No. 10 UConn, 4-3, on Saturday evening at the Toscano Family Ice Forum in Hockey East Action. The teams split the home-and-home series as UConn won 4-1 on Friday in Durham.
The Wildcats were tailing 3-1 and scored three straight goals to secure the win.
Freshman forward Jacob Newcombe (Sambro, Nova Scotia) recorded a multi-point game with one goal and one assist for two points. Junior alternate captain J.P. Turner (East Falmouth, Mass.) and junior forward Nick Ring (Hingham, Mass.) each scored a goal.
Senior goalie Jared Whale (Calgary, Alberta), who made his first start of the season, recorded 33 saves to earn the win.
The Wildcats improve to 6-7-0 (3-4-0 Hockey East), while the Huskies fall to 7-5-2 (5-3-1 Hockey East).
UP NEXT:
- The next three games are on the road for the Wildcats with a game at Bentley (Nov. 29) and a two-game Border Battle series at Maine (Dec. 5-6) presented by Buffalo Wild Wings. HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Huskies took a 1-0 lead at 7:28 of the first period, when Jake Percival sent a wrist shot from the slot to the upper glove side corner of the net.
- At 6:59 of the second period, the Wildcats tied the game as Turner fired a shot from the right faceoff circle past the stick side of Kam Hendrickson. Sophomore forward Cam MacDonald (Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia) posted an assist.

- Just 25 seconds later, Kaden Shahan scored on a breakaway to give UConn a 2-1 lead.
- Then at 9:47, UConn netted a shorthanded goal as Joey Muldowney sent a pass to Ryan Tattle who knocked it in to increase the lead to 3-1.
- The 'Cats cut the deficit to 3-2 at 15:23 when Newcombe tipped in a shot by freshman defenseman Alex Carr (Sackville, Nova Scotia) for the power play goal. Freshman defenseman Nick De Angelis (King City, Ontario) recorded an assist.

- Ring tied the contest at 3-3 at 14:24 of the third period when he scored on a turn around goal from the slot off a pass by Newcombe. Freshman forward Félix Gagnon (Jonquière, Quebec) also tallied an assist.

- Then at 15:30, Skrastins netted the game winner when he knocked in a rebound off a shot by junior defenseman Brendan Fitzgerald (North Reading, Mass.). Freshman defenseman Conner de Haro (Raleigh, N.C.) also recorded an assist on the goal.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- UConn outshot UNH, 36-30
- The Wildcats went 1-2 on the man-advantage and the Wildcats did not commit a penalty on the night.
- Whale posted 33 saves to earn the win in his first start of the season , while Kam Hendrickson made 26 saves for UConn to earn the win.
