UNH Edged 2-1 in Border Battle at Maine

ORONO, Maine – Sophomore goaltender Sedona Blair (Eden Prairie, Minn.) made 24 saves but the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team was edged 2-1 by the University of Maine at Alfond Arena on Friday night.
Blair, the reigning Stop it Goaltending Goaltender of the Week in Hockey East, made 12 of her 24 saves in the first period and followed with six stops each of the last two periods.
Sophomore Julia Cabral (Lee, N.H.) scored early in the first period to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Maine goalie Julia Bachetti made 13 of her 19 saves in the scoreless second period. Mira Seregely netted the game-tying goal and Lily Fetch scored the game-winner 1:12 into the final frame.
UNH moves to 12-12-1 overall and 8-10-0 in Hockey East while Maine is now 7-18-1, 6-12-1.

FIRST PERIOD
- Maine recorded a 13-2 shot advantage in the first period, which ended with the score tied at 1-1.
- In the second minute of the game, Blair stopped Seregely's initial shot from the left faceoff dot and then Kendall Sundby off the rebound at the top of the crease.
- Cabral gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at 2:22. Sara Boucher (Burlington, Ontario) carried the puck into the zone on the left boards and slipped a pass back to the point for Lucie Legro (Brentwood, N.H.). Her shot was stopped in front by Cabral, who turned and deposited a shot between Bachetti's legs into the net.
- Maine tied the score, 1-1, on Seregely's goal at 7:41.
- The Black Bears went on the first power play of the game at 9:14 and Blair stopped the only shot on goal to keep the game deadlocked.
SECOND PERIOD
- UNH had a 13-6 edge in shots in the second stanza.
- Blair stopped a 2-on-1 rush in the eighth minute when she blocked down Adriana Van De Leest's shot in the low slot and then denied Fetch off the rebound low on the right side.
- In a 2-on-1 rush for the Wildcats in the 10th minute, Cabral charged down the slot and redirected a shot on goal that Bachetti turned aside.
- Verrier's apparent go-ahead goal at 10:14 was disallowed. Following a lengthy review, the referees ruled that she initially controlled the puck with a high stick before firing a shot into the upper-left corner of the net.
- UNH went on its first power play at 12:46, but Bachetti stopped all four shots on goal to preserve the 1-1 deadlock.
THIRD PERIOD
- The Black Bears recorded a 7-5 shot advantage in the final frame.
- Maine took its first lead of the game, 2-1, at 1:12 when Danielle Brunette's initial shot from the left point was stopped by Blair but Fetch poked the rebound across the goal line.
- Blair was pulled in favor of an extra skater with 1:44 remaining.
- Verrier's chance was stopped by Bachetti with 74 seconds to play and the Maine goalie also denied Andi Calderone (Kirkland, Quebec) with 50 seconds on the clock.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Cabral scored her second goal of the season – also her second career goal.
- Boucher recorded her 12th points of the season to move into a tie for third on the team in points.
- Boucher has 149 career points with 74 goals and 75 assists in 152 games.
- Legro has three points on three assists this season.
- Verrier led all skaters with 10 faceoff wins.
- Calderone and Boucher tied for the team lead with two blocks.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Maine finished with a 26-20 shot advantage, whereas UNH had the 26-20 edge in faceoffs.
- UNH was credited with 11 blocks and Maine had eight.
- The Wildcats were 0-for-1 on the power play and the Black Bears were 0-for-3.
