Taranto Scores Four Goals in Senior Day Loss to UAlbany

DURHAM, N.H. – Grad student Katie Taranto (Brewster, N.Y.) scored four goals but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was defeated 18-9 by UAlbany in Saturday afternoon's Senior Day game at Tucker Field.
Taranto's four goals and four points both marked team highs for the Wildcats. Senior Mackenzie MacEachern (Bedford, N.H.) was the other 'Cat who scored multiple goals with two. Grad student Liv Dunn (Newbury, Mass.; one goal, one assist) and classmate Grace Curran (North Salem, N.Y.; two assists) both finished with two points.
UNH junior goalkeeper Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) was credited with eight saves.
Mikaela Mooney (five goals, one assist) and Megan Dineen (4g, 1a) led the Great Danes' offense while goalie Grace Cincebox made 11 saves.
UNH finishes the 2024 season at 2-12 overall and 0-6 in the America East conference. UAlbany is now 7-9, 5-1.

FIRST QUARTER
- The first four minutes of the game remained scoreless.
- The Wildcats came out strong and Hannah McCarthy (Bedford, N.H.) scored the first goal of the game at 11:28 when she picked up a loose ball in the middle of the fan and shot high past Cincebox.
- Dunn scored three minutes later, extending the UNH lead 2-0 at 8:45. From behind the goal line extended on the right side, Curran found Dunn alone in front and she deposited a shot inside the right post.
- Shortly later, Grace McCauley scored for the Great Danes to trim the deficit to 2-1 t 7:33.
- UAlbany's Megan Dineen scored at 3:11 to tie it up, 2-2.
- With 2:31 on the clock, Taranto put UNH back in the lead with a free-position goal for her 95th career point.
- Megan Dineen scored her second goal of the game for UAlbany, tying it up once again, 3-3, with 21 seconds remaining.
SECOND QUARTER
- UNH scored the first goal of the second quarter with a free-position shot scored by Taranto from the top of the fan at 14:29 to give the 'Cats a 4-3 lead.
- With 12:46 on the clock, MacEachern scored her 97th career point when she cut down the right side and finished a feed from Curran with a shot inside the far post to extend the advantage to 5-3.
- The Great Danes scored with a goal from Bryar Hogg at 10:28.
- The score remained 5-4 for nearly seven minutes, until Taranto scored her third free-position goal of the game to reestablish a two-goal advantage, 6-4, at 3:34.
- A minute later, Dineen scored her third goal of the game to once again make it a one-goal game.
- Seventeen seconds later, however, Izzy Holmes (Seattle, Wash.) extended the lead for the Wildcats to 7-5. She raced down the middle from midfield, dodged to her left at the top of the 12-meter and bounced a shot in from the 8-meter.
- The half ended with UNH in the lead, 7-6.
THIRD QUARTER
- MacEachern scored the first goal of the third quarter – her second of the game – when she advanced down the middle from the top of the 8-meter and ripped a shot inside the right post t give New Hampshire an 8-6 lead at 12:54.
- Allie Maloney then scored two goals for the Great Danes to tie it up 8-8, at 11:27.
- In the next six minutes, UAlbany's Mikaela Mooney scored four consecutive goals to give the Great Danes their first lead of the game and build a 12-8 advantage.
- UAlbany then had two goals 11 seconds apart from Dineen and Kloey Roos to push the lead to 14-8 at 3:08.
- The quarter ended with UAlbany in the lead, 15-8.
FOURTH QUARTER
- UAlbany's Ava Poupard scored the first goal of the quarter to give the visitors a 16-8 advantage at 13:21.
- Off a pass from Dunn, Taranto bounced a shot in from the middle of the fan to score her fourth goal of the game to lift the 'Cats within 16-9 at 12:04.
- The score remained 16-9 for almost eight minutes until Mikaela Mooney scored for UAlbany at 4:25.
- Zareen Sorho scored for with exactly one minute left in the quarter.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UAlbany finished with the lead in shots, 38-37, including 26-20 on goal.
- UNH collected more ground balls, 16-15, and committed fewer turnovers (10-14).
- UAlbany had a 23-8 edge in draw controls.
- The Wildcats were 18 of 21 on clear attempts while UAlbany was 17-for-19.
- UNH scored on all three free-position shots – all by Taranto – and the Great Danes were 2-for-5.

- Taranto ends her career with 98 points on 83 goals and 15 assists.
- MacEachern increased her career totals to 73 goals and 25 assists for 98 points.
- McCarthy caps her career with 67 goals and 17 assists for 84 points; she totaled 19 goals for 19 points in her one year as a Wildcat.
- Jesslyn Hounchell (Cornwall, Vt.) tallied a team-high three ground balls.
- Allie Connerty (Norwell, Mass.) led the 'Cats with a career-high two caused turnovers.
- MacEachern led UNH with four draw controls.
SENIOR DAY
- The UNH women's lacrosse program acknowledged the contributions of our senior class. We honored the class of Mackenzie MacEachern, Olivia O'Connor (Hopkinton, Mass.), Julia Lucey (Topsfield, Mass.) and Payton Maddaloni (Mattituck, N.Y.), as well as graduate student Hannah McCarthy, in a Senior Day ceremony.
