Connerty, Taranto Propel UNH Past Marist, 19-8, with Six Points Apiece

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Katie Taranto (Brewster, N.Y.) and Allie Connerty (Norwell, Mass.) record six points apiece to propel the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team to Friday afternoon's 19-8 season-opening win against Marist College at Tenney Stadium.
Taranto finished the game with five goals and an assist while Connerty scored a career-high four goals and also had two assists to match her best of six points. Hannah McCarthy Bedford, N.H.; three goals) and captain Izzy Holmes (Seattle, Wash.; two goals, one assist) both recorded three points.
Erin Fagan (Clarksburg, Md.; two goals), Liv Dunn (Newbury, Mass.; goal, assist) and Grace Curran (North Salem, N.Y.; two assists) also tallied multiple points with two apiece.
UNH goalkeeper Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) was credited with nine saves.
Marist was led offensively by Kelly Trotta with three goals. Starting goalie Miranda Lopes made six saves and allowed 19 goals in 58:15. Morgan Carroll did not face a shot in the final 1:45.

FIRST QUARTER
- Connerty gave New Hampshire a 1-0 lead 1 minute, 22 seconds into the game and the 'Cats led the rest of the way.
- Taranto finished a feed from Connerty to extend the advantage to 2-0 at 10:41.
- After Marist pulled within 2-1 at 9:05, Connerty's second unassisted tally reestablished a two-goal advantage, 3-1, at 5:18.
- Taranto followed with her second goal on a player-up tally at 2:44 to push the margin to 4-1.
- The Red Foxes scored with 31 seconds on the clock to trim the deficit to 4-2.
SECOND QUARTER
- McCarthy converted Holmes' pass into a 5-2 lead at 14:33.
- The home team scored goals 31 seconds apart to close within 5-4 at 13:50.
- UNH inched ahead 6-4 on a goal by Holmes at 13:14, but Trotta scored nine seconds later to once again make it a one-goal margin,
- Curran recorded her second assist on McCarthy's second goal that gave UNH a 7-5 lead at 10:01.
- The score did not change until Connerty's third goal made it 8-5 at 1:40, then Dylan Lyons (Orange, Conn,) scored her first collegiate goal with 36 seconds remaining to send the Wildcats into halftime with their largest lead of the half, 9-5.
THIRD QUARTER
- The teams alternated goals in the third quarter to advance the score to 12-7.
- UNH struck first in the second half with Taranto's third goal at 13:37.
- McCarthy's third tally pushed the score to 11-6 at 7:45 and Fagan beat the clock with her first career goal with one second on the clock.
FOURTH QUARTER
- The Wildcats scored the first seven goals of the fourth quarter to extend the margin to double digits.
- Abby Hawkes (Amherst, N.H.) netted her first career goal 21 seconds into the final frame to ignite the run.
- Connerty's fourth goal and sixth point of the game increased the lead to 14-7 at 10:10.
- Dunn set up Fagan's goal at 9:06 and then scored at 8:07 for a 16-7 advantage.
- Taranto pushed the margin to double figures, 17-7, at 7:28.
- Holmes struck again at 6:03 and Taranto scored UNH's 19th goal at 3:59.
- Marist capped the scoring with 1:45 to play.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH recorded a 31-22 shot advantage that included 25-17 on goal.
- The Wildcats also finished with the edge in draw controls (16-14) and committed fewer turnovers (16-19).
- UNH was successful on 18 of 21 clear attempts and Marist was 15-for-18.
- The Red Foxes had a 22-15 edge in ground balls.
- UNH scored on 2 of 5 free positions and Hagan stopped both of Marist's free-position shots.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Jesslyn Hounchell (Cornwall, Vt.) and Paige Kenny (Kensington, Md.) tied for the team lead with three ground balls.
- Hounchell also led the 'Cats with two caused turnovers.
- Holmes led all players with five draw controls.
- Curran matched her best of two assists.
- Connerty is UNH's active career leader with 50 assists. She also has 30 goals for a total of 80 points.
- Taranto is now UNH's active career leader in goals with 60.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 3-0 lifetime record against Marist.
- The previous two meetings were both in Durham.
