Curtis Tallies Five Points in 13-10 Loss at UMBC

BALTIMORE – Senior Emily Curtis (Walpole, Mass.) matched her career high with a team-best five points, but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was defeated 13-10 by UMBC on Saturday afternoon at Retriever Soccer Park.
Curits scored a team-high four goals also had an assist to finish with five points. Sophomore Mackenzie MacEachern (Bedford, N.H.) scored three goals and junior Liv Dunn (Newbury, Mass.) also had three points with one goal and two assists.
Senior goalkeeper Issy Torres (Elmhurst, Ill.) made three saves and allowed five goals in the first quarter; she exited the game at the end of those 15 minutes and was charged with the loss. Freshman Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) stopped seven shots and yielded eight goals in 45 minutes.
UMBC was led offensively by Claire Bockstie (four goals, two assists) and Megan Halczuk (2g, 2a), who also had a game-high seven draw controls. Lexi Roberts made 10 saves.
UNH ends the 2022 season with a 7-8 overall record that includes 2-4 in America East. UMBC improved to 8-8, 2-4.
The Wildcats finished tied for fifth place in the final America East conference standings with UMBC and Binghamton University, but lost both tiebreakers to miss the conference tourney.
FIRST QUARTER

FIRST QUARTER
- UMBC led 5-4 with a 13-8 shot advantage through 15 minutes.
- Dunn set up the first goal of the game by MacEachern to give New Hampshire a 1-0 lead at 12:50.
- UMBC scored three consecutive goals, including free-position tallies 27 seconds apart by Katana Nelson and Dymin Gerow – at 7:52 and 7:25, respectively – to take a 3-1 lead.
- MacEachern struck again – this time off a pass from Curtis – to lift UNH within 3-2 at 4:58.
- Dunn's unassisted goal leveled the score, 3-3, at 3:13.
- The Retrievers went back in front 51 seconds later, however, and Gerow's second goal of the game pushed the advantage to 5-3 with 32 seconds remaining.
- Sophomore Kelsey MacCallum (Franklin, Mass.) beat the clock by converting a free position into a goal with one second on the clock.
SECOND QUARTER
- UMBC outscored the 'Cats 4-2 with an 11-5 advantage in the second quarter.
- Bockstie scored consecutive goals at 10:52 and 6;13 to extend the Retrievers' lead to 7-4.
- The Wildcats responded with back-to-back free-position goals by senior Abby Cranney (Amherst, N.H.) and Curtis at 5:13 and 3:12, respectively, to close within one goal at 7-6.
- UNH had two possessions with a chance to tie the score, but lost the ball on turnovers both times.
- UMBC scored twice in the final nine seconds to quickly transform a one-goal margin into a 9-6 lead heading into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
- Both teams scored three goals in the third quarter; UMBC once again had the shot advantage (8-6).
- MacEachern's third goal of the game lifted UNH within 9-7 at 12:57.
- The 'Cats had two more possessions to trim the deficit but once again committed two turnovers.
- Bockstie scored her fourth goal of the day to reestablish a three-goal lead, 10-7, at 7:49.
- UNH recorded three shots – one on goal – in the next two possessions but could not reduce the three-goal differential.
- Olivia Docal converted Bockstie's pass into a goal and 11-7 lead at 2:59.
- Curtis scored back-to-back goals with 36 seconds and nine seconds remaining to lift the Wildcats within 11-9.
- UMBC's Kolby Weedon won the ensuing draw control and scored with one second on the clock to push the lead to 12-9.
FOURTH QUARTER
- UNH recorded a 7-6 shot advantage in the fourth quarter.
- The 'Cats recorded two shots and three turnovers in the first half of the final quarter.
- Halczuk made it 13-9 at 6:50.
- New Hampshire recorded three shots on its next two possessions, but Roberts stopped two and the third sailed high to keep the margin at four goals with 3:24 remaining.
- The Wildcats regained possession with 1:50 to play and Curtis finished a feed from Dunn to trim the deficit to 13-10 at 1:29.
- New Hampshire called time out, but UMBC controlled the draw and held possession until the waning seconds to secure the win.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UMBC finished with the edge in shots (38-26), shots on goal (23-20) and draw controls (17-7).
- UNH had the advantage in ground balls (21-17) and turnovers (13-18).
- The Wildcats scored on 4 of 7 free-position shots; UMBC was 5-for-10.

- MacEachern extended her goal and point streaks to 13 games. She led UNH in both goals (34) and points (43).
- Dunn pushed her point streak to 12 games. She ranked second in assists (19) and tied for second on points (36).
- Curtis had a career-high five points for the second consecutive game. She ended her career on a six-game goal and point streak with 17 goals and one assist for 18 points.
- Curtis ranked third with 27 goals and tied for fifth in points (29).
- MacCallum tied Dunn with 36 points on 21 goals and 15 assists.
- Senior captain Meghan Doyle (Pittsford, N.Y.) was the season leader in caused turnovers (14) and ranked second in ground balls (24); she had one ground ball in the finale at UMBC.
- Freshman Emma Magazu (Newtown, Conn.) led the 'Cats in ground balls (26) and was second in caused turnovers (12); she was credited with two ground balls vs. UMBC.
- Senior captain Delaney Pratt (Lafayette, Colo.) was the team leader in draw controls (50); MacEachern was next with 46.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 15-5 lifetime record against UMBC; the Wildcats had won the previous three meetings.
- UNH and UMBC have met annually since 2004 – the year the Retrievers joined America East – with the exception of the COVID-abbreviated 2020 season.
