Win Streak Stopped at Four With 18-11 Loss at Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Senior captain Delaney Pratt (Lafayette, Colo.) and sophomore Mackenzie MacEachern (Bedford, N.H.) scored three goals apiece, but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was defeated 18-11 by Iona College at Mazzella Field on Saturday afternoon.
MacEachern also had a career- and game-high eight draw controls as well as one caused turnover. Pratt finished with four draws.
Sophomore Kelsey MacCallum (Franklin, Mass.) and freshman Allie Connerty (Norwell, Mass.) also tallied multiple points for the Wildcats. MacCallum finished with a goal and two assists for three points and Connerty had two assists for two points.
Freshman goalkeeper Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) was credited with 10 saves. Classmate Emma Magazu (Newtown, Conn.) tied for the lead among all players with three ground balls.
Iona was led offensively by Megan Collins (two goals, four assists), Kira Varada (4g, 1a) and Gabriele Thornton (3g, 1a). Sofia Votto made eight saves.
New Hampshire, which entered the game winners of four straight games, is now 5-4. Iona extended its winning streak to seven games to improve to 7-1.

FIRST QUARTER
- Iona recorded an 8-5 shot advantage and led 2-1 through 15 minutes.
- Thornton broke the scoreless tie with a free-position goal at 10:43 and then Alexa Maggiacomo scored at 8:04 to give the home team a 2-0 lead.
- Senior captain Meghan Doyle (Pittsford, N.Y.) corralled a ground ball at 7:16 and at the other end of the field, Connerty set up Pratt's first goal of the game to lift UNH within 2-1 at 6:01.
- Hagan made a save to deny Maggiacomo at 3:08 and then she denied Katherine Meyer in the closing minute to keep the 'Cats within a goal.
SECOND QUARTER
- Iona had a 12-8 edge in shots in the second quarter to outscore the guests 4-2 and take a 6-3 lead into halftime.
- MacEachern won the opening draw control of the quarter, and then senior Abby Cranney (Amherst, N.H.) finished a feed from MacCallum to tie the score, 2-2, at 14:09.
- Iona regained the lead 63 seconds later on Leah Marshall's goal at 13:06.
- Pratt's second goal of the game – this time on a free-position shot – leveled the score, 3-3, at 10:33.
- The Gaels once again went back in front, 4-3, on Emily Stewart's player-up goal at 7:52.
- Hagan's save and ground ball by Magazu kept the margin at one goal at 6:50, and then MacCallum's shot rang off the post at 5:23.
- Varada scored goals 24 seconds apart – at 1:01 and 37 seconds to quickly extend Iona's lead to 6-3.
THIRD QUARTER
- The shots were even at 10 and Iona outscored the Wildcats 7-6 in the third quarter.
- UNH opened the second half on a 4-0 run to take its first lead of the game, 7-6.
- MacEachern controlled the opening draw and scored an unassisted goal at 14:32 to trim the deficit to 6-4.
- She also won possession on the ensuing draw control, which led by a goal by senior Lily Powell (Marcellus, N.Y.) at 13:17.
- Iona gained possession on the next draw control, but Hagan made a save on Kati Paavola's shot to give the ball to the 'Cats.
- Junior Katie Taranto (Brewster, N.Y.) scored a free-position goal to tie the score, 6-6, at 12:01.
- Following another save by Hagan, MacCallum netted an unassisted goal to give UNH a 7-6 lead at 9:01.
- Iona called time out and scored three goals within 57 seconds to take a 9-7 lead at 7:23.
- MacEachern struck again on a free position at 5:37 to pull the 'Cats within 9-8.
- Emma Rippon responded with a goal 30 seconds later to reestablish a two-goal advantage.
- Following a goal by Iona at 4:05, MacEachern scored her third goal of the game at 3:21 to advance the score to 11-9.
- Rippon and Varada scored goals 47 seconds apart to push the margin to four goals, 13-9, at 1:52.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Iona outscored the 'Cats 5-2 in the fourth quarter with a 9-7 shot advantage.
- MacEachern won the opening draw, which led to MacCallum setting up Pratt's third goal of the game that trimmed the deficit to 13-10 at 14:18.
- Iona responded with three quick goals to build a 16-10 lead at 11:09.
- Amber Brewster pushed the margin to 17-10 at 3:12.
- Junior Liv Dunn (Newbury, Mass.) ended the run with an unassisted goal at 1:37.
- The Gaels closed the scoring with nine seconds left.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Iona finished with the edge in shots (39-30), draw controls 920-14), ground balls (11-9) and turnovers (7-11).
- UNH scored on 3 of 9 free-position shots; the Gaels were 2-for-6.
- The Wildcats were 12-for-15 on clear attempts; Iona was perfect on 17 clear attempts.
- Neither team had a shot clock violation.
- The 'Cats were issued four yellow cards in comparison to Iona's one.

- Pratt, MacEachern and MacCallum all extended their goal and point streaks to seven games.
