BOSTON – University of New Hampshire sophomore midfielder Whitney Wiley (Vienna, Va.) and freshman back Alivia Kelly (Pembroke, Mass.) were named the America East Offensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday for their performances in the Wildcats' wins against Merrimack College and University of Rhode Island.
It is the first career conference Player of the Week award for Wiley. This is the second award of the season for Kelly, who was selected to the TopDrawer.com Team of the Week on Feb. 16.
Wiley scored a total of three goals, including two game-winning tallies, and an assist for seven points as UNH defeated Merrimack, 5-1, on Feb. 24 and URI, 2-0, on Feb. 28.
Wiley recorded two goals and one assist versus the Warriors for a career high in points with five. It was the second time Wiley scored two goals in her collegiate career. She set up the match's first goal in the fifth minute and then scored in the 32nd minute to extend the lead to 2-0. Wiley scored 3:01 into the second half to give the 'Cats a 5-0 lead.
She continued her strong week against URI by scoring a goal on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute to give New Hampshire a 1-0 lead.
Wiley is currently ranked first in America East in goals, points, game-winning goals and shots. She's played 247 minutes this season, which calculates to producing a goal approximately every 82 minutes.
Wiley has been incredibly accurate this season, as evident by her shots on goal. She's taken six shots, all of which have been on goal.
Kelly anchored UNH's backline as the Wildcats allowed a total of four shots on goal and one goal in two wins last week. The 'Cats yielded just five shots – two on goal – in the 5-1 win vs. Merrimack. And with Kelly once again directing the defensive unit against URI, the Rams recorded seven shots and once again only two were on goal as New Hampshire recorded its second clean sheet in three games this season.
The Wildcats (3-0-0) are scheduled to play their first conference game against the University of Maine on March 7 (2 p.m.) at Wildcat Stadium.
