THE MATCHUP
New Hampshire and third-ranked Northeastern University continue one of the longest rivalries in women's hockey with the 146th and 147th meetings between the programs this weekend. UNH has a 79-57-9 lifetime record against Northeastern, but the Huskies have won each of the past nine meetings and have a 13-2-0 edge the past 15; both UNH wins were in overtime.
UNH COACH WAS A STANDOUT PLAYER AT NU
Seventh-year UNH head coach Hilary Witt was the first Northeastern women's hockey player to eclipse either 100 career goals or 200 career points, and until 2017 she was the all-time leader with 113 goals and 208 points (currently second in both stats); she also ranks fourth in career assists (95) as well as second in games (140).The 2001 graduate led the Huskies in goals all four years, in assists twice (1998, 2000) and in points her final three years (1998-99-2000). Witt still holds three of the top 10 marks on NU's single-season list for both goals and points.
Witt was a three-time candidate for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, which is presented annually to the most outstanding player in women's college hockey. She was honored for her exemplary collegiate career with induction into the Northeastern University Hall of Fame in '05 and the Women's Beanpot Hall of Fame in 2010. She has also been inducted into the Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame.
NICOLE KELLY NAMED ROOKIE OF THE MONTH BY HOCKEY EAST
Freshman forward Nicole Kelly was named Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month for November/December 2020 by Hockey East. Kelly recorded two goals and seven assists for nine points in 10 games the months of November and December. She ended the 2020 calendar year with a four-game point streak.
NATIONAL LEADERBOARD
Nicole Kelly is No. 10 in the nation in freshmen points per game at 0.90; she has nine points (2g, 7a) in 10 games. Kelly's nine points is tied atop the rookie leaderboard.
CLIMBING UP UNH'S CAREER LIST
Redshirt junior goalie Ava Boutilier became the fourth player in UNH history to record 2,000 career saves with the ninth of her 11 saves Dec. 23 against Holy Cross. Boutilier enters the weekend with 2,027 career saves and is approaching #3 Melissa Bourdon (2004-07) at 2,060 and #2 Alicia Roberts (1998-2000) at 2,090. Jen Huggon (2000-03) holds the benchmark of 2,851.
Boutilier entered the Top 5 in career minutes Dec. 30 at Holy Cross. She enters the series vs. NU at 4403:51 and #4 on the list is Kayley Herman (2008-11) at 4447:31 -- that's a difference of 43 minutes, 40 seconds.
