DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team is back in action this Tuesday, February 4 in a mid-week non-conference matchup with the Dartmouth Big Green at the Whittemore Center. Puck drop on 'Embrace New Hampshire' night is set for 7 P.M. on CBS CollegeSportsLive.
The Wildcats are coming off a tough weekend at Maine, where they battled back for a conference point in a 2-2 tie on Saturday. The Big Green enter the week on a six-game losing streak.
For tickets, visit UNHWildcats.com/tickets or call (603)862-4000!
The contest will be UNH's only home game of the week; the Wildcats head on the road for two games this Friday and Saturday, traveling to Chestnut Hill on Friday to face Boston College on NESN, and to North Andover on Saturday to face Merrimack.
TIGHT PLAYOFF RACE
The Wildcats find themselves in sixth place entering the week; positions 4-6, which consist of Providence, UConn, and UNH are all separated by one to two points each. Boston College sits in third with 28 points, followed by Providence (25), UConn (24), and UNH (22). The Wildcats have five Hockey East games remaining this season, with 10 conference points up for grabs in those contests.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Wildcats took one point out of Orono, as Maine took the season series with a 2-0-1 record. The Wildcats fell by a score of 5-1 in game one, and rallied back to tie Maine 2-2 on Saturday in game two.
- The underclassmen line of Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ontario), Jada Christian (Caledon East, Ontario) and Tamara Thiérus (Saint Jérôme, Quebec) led the way in the 2-2 tie, talling all four UNH points in the contest. Lauren Martin tied the game at 1-1 just 11 seconds into the second period, assisted by both Christian and Thiérus. After a Maine power play goal, Christian stole the puck at the edge of the Maine defensive zone and skated in unassisted to once again tie the game at 2-2.
- Freshman netminder Ava Thewes (Clarkston, Mich.) notched her second and third career appearances, and stopped all 26 shots she faced in relief, earning her first career tie on Saturday.
DOWN BUT NOT OUT
The Wildcats have faced 116 opponent power play opportunities, allowing only 12 goals; that's good for a .897 penalty kill percentage, ranked #6 in the country.
STRENGTH IN NET
For just the second time in Hockey East women's history, three goaltenders from the same team have received a weekly award this season, in Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island), Nikki Harnett (Plymouth, Minn.), and Ava Thewes. Of UNH's nine weekly awards from the conference this season, seven of them have been won by goaltenders. This feat has only been achieved by one other women's Hockey East team in history, the 2018-19 Northeastern Huskies.
ABOUT DARTMOUTH:
- The Big Green (Hanover, N.H.) hold a 5-14-3 overall record, 2-11-3 ECAC record.
- Dartmouth is on a lengthy losing skid dating back to early January, their last win coming on January 3rd against Rensselaer, 4-0.
- The Granite State Rivalry has been going strong in women's hockey since 1978; New Hampshire holds the advantage in the all-time series, with a 38-12-4 record.
- The two teams faced off in Hanover last season in a 2-0 UNH victory off two second-period goals by Nicole Dunbar (Coto de Caza, Calif.) on the power play and Taylor Wenczkowski (Rochester, N.H.). It was UNH's sixth contest in a season-best nine-game unbeaten streak.
