Seniors, Torres Lead 'Cats Past UAlbany, 56-53

DURHAM, N.H. – Seniors Maggie Ahearn (Marshfield, Mass.), Caroline Soucy (Beverly, Mass.) and Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) all scored in double digits to lead the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to a 56-53 Senior Day victory against UAlbany at Lundholm Gym.
Soucy and Storey netted 11 points apiece and Ahearn scored 10. Soucy also tallied three rebounds and three steals, while Storey finished with four rebounds and four assists. Ahearn added four rebounds, a steal and a block.
Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) scored 11 points and hit two free throws with 2.7 seconds left in the game to seal the win. Her other stats included four rebounds, four steals, an assist and one block.
UAlbany was led by Helene Haegerstrand (15 points, seven rebounds) and Alexi Schecter (11 points, five rebounds).
UNH completed the season series sweep of the Great Danes to extend its winning streak to three games, improve to 10-16 overall and 7-7 in America East. UAlbany is now 9-18, 5-9.

- UNH matched its season low of six turnovers and recorded nine steals.
- The Wildcats scored 23 third-quarter points with a .429 field goal percentage (6-14) and .818 free throw percentage (9-11).

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ahearn opened the game scoring with a steal and fastbreak layup at 8:03.
- UAlbany took a 6-2 lead, but the Wildcat responded with an 8-2 run to take a 10-8 lead on Soucy's 3-pointer at 3:52.
- The Great Danes went back in front 13-10 before Ivy Gogolin (Hopkinton, Mass.) made a layup to end the first quarter.
- UAlbany's Haegerstrand started the second quarter with a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 16-12.
- That remained the score until Amanda Kantzy's layup pushed the margin to 18-12 at 4:46.
- Storey scored UNH's first basket in the second quarter at 1:19 to lift the 'Cats within 20-15.
- The Great Danes took a 22-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.
- Ahearn starts the third quarter by going 4-for-4 at the line to bring the Wildcats within 22-19 at 8:37.

- Trailing 48-41, Soucy had a key steal and fastbreak layup to ignite a 6-0 spurt that lifted the 'Cats within one point, 48-47, at 3:56.
- The Great Danes took a 51-48 lead at 2:46, but Torres responded with a driving layup, steal and another layup to give New Hampshire a 52-51 advantage at 2:05.
