DeChent Nets 17 Points in 62-58 OT Win at UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. – Junior guard Eva DeChent (Westchester, N.Y.) scored a team-high 17 points to lead the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to Thursday night's 62-58 America East conference road win in overtime against UMass Lowell at Kennedy Family Athletic Complex.
DeChent, who made 9 of 10 free throws, pulled down seven rebounds to tie for the team lead with junior guard Maggie Cavanaugh (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) and senior forward Lucia Melero Sabat (Barcelona, Spain). Cavanaugh and DeChent also tied for the game high of three assists.
Cavanaugh and Melero Sabat both scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Freshman forward Averie Harding (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) scored a career-high 11 points.
UMass Lowell was led by Jaini Edmonds (18 points), Nia Chima (15 points, 13 rebounds) and Sabrina Larson (12 points).
UNH won its second consecutive game to improve to 8-13 overall and 2-6 in America East while UML is now 6-15, 0-8.

FIRST QUARTER
- After the Wildcats fell behind 4-0, Kenzie Matulonis (Raynham, Mass.) scored on a layup down the left side of the land to tie the score, 6-6, at 5:10.
- Alia Cordone (Davis, Calif.) gave the 'Cats their first lead of the game, 12-10, when she scored off a putback at 2:02.
- Carolina Williams (Valatie, N.Y.) netted a 3-pointer from the left wing to give UNH a 15-13 lead at 1:18.
- UML made a pair of free throws with 41 seconds on the clock to level the score, 15-15, through 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
- The River Hawks went on an 8-0 run to transform a one-point deficit into a 26-19 lead at 3:59.
- DeChent beat a defender on the drive and sidestepped another at the rim to lift UNH within 28-25 with 32 seconds on the clock but Edmonds beat the buzzer to send the home team into halftime with a five-point lead.
THIRD QUARTER
- UML scored the first five points of the third quarter to extend the advantage to double digits, 35-25, at 8:41.
- Harding scored six consecutive points to pull UNH within 40-37 at 1:51.
- The River Hawks inched ahead to a 45-39 lead with one minute on the clock.
- Elizabeth Lavoie (Hampstead, N.H.) made two free throws with two seconds left to trim the margin to 51-45 through three quarters.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Cavanaugh's driving layup leveled the score, 47-47, at 7:21.
- UNH went back in front, 51-49, when Cavanaugh found Harding for a layup at 2:46.
- The teams exchanged scores the rest of the way and Cavanaugh's jumper in the paint tied the score, 53-53, with 23 seconds left in regulation.
- The River Hawks missed a go-ahead shot with three seconds left to send the game into overtime.
OVERTIME
- DeChent broke the deadlock with one foul shot at 4:25, then her steal and layup gave the Wildcats a 56-53 lead at 4:05.
- UML inched closer on Chima's foul shot at 3:35.
- Cavanaugh hit another jumper in the paint to push the advantage to 58-54 with 47 seconds to play, and she made one free throw with 29 seconds on the clock to make it a five-point lead.
- Larsson's 3-pointer lifted UMass Lowell within 59-57 with 20 seconds to go.
- The River Hawks fouled immediately to send Cavanaugh to the line, where she made two free throws to give the 'Cats a 61-57 lead.
- UML missed a pair of field goals before Klimentina Modeva went to the foul line with two seconds left. After making the first to make it a three-point game, Modeva intentionally missed the second attempt but Harding pulled down the defensive rebound to secure the win.
- Harding made one free throw to close the scoring, 62-58.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Matulonis recorded a season-high four steals for the third consecutive game.
- Harding scored in double digits for the first time. Her previous career high was eight points at Vermont.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- There were nine ties and nine lead changes – none in overtime.
- UNH outscored UMass Lowell 42-14 in the paint.
- The Wildcats committed a season-low eight turnovers. UML had 13.
- New Hampshire scored five of its nine overtime points on free throws (5 of 8).
