DeChent Scores 1,000th Career Point in Loss at UMBC

BALTIMORE – Junior guard Eva DeChent (Westchester, N.Y.) scored a team-high 15 points and her 1,000th career point but the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team was defeated 61-44 by UMBC at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena on Saturday.
DeChent, who entered the game with 988 career points, reached the milestone with a layup at 5:22 of the fourth quarter. She also had four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
Senior forward Lucia Melero Sabat (Barcelona, Spain) finished with 10 points and team-high six rebounds.
UMBC was led by Delaney Yarborough (21 points) and Jade Tillman (13).
UNH moves to 8-17 overall and 2-10 in America East. UMBC is now 12-12, 7-5.

FIRST QUARTER
- UNH got off to a quick start as both Elizabeth Lavoie (Hampstead, N.H.) and DeChent hit a 3-pointer in the opening minute of the game to give the Wildcats a 6-0 lead.
- The 'Cats also led 8-2 and 10-4 before UMBC ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run to forge a 10-10 tie through 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
- Yarborough opened the second quarter scoring with a pair of free throws to give the Retrievers their first lead of the game, 12-10, at 9:08.
- Melero Sabat's layup leveled the score, 12-12, at 8:58.
- UMBC went on a 7-2 spurt to build a 21-14 advantage at 7:00.
- Back-to-back layups by Maggie Cavanaugh (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) and Averie Harding (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and two DeChent free throws trimmed the deficit to one point, 23-22, at 2:10.
- UMBC's Heidi Williams beat the halftime buzzer to give the home team a 27-24 lead going into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
- UMBC opened the third quarter on a 9-0 run to build a double-digit margin, 36-24, at 5:02.
- Carolina Williams (Valatie, N.Y.) ended the spurt with a 3-pointer at 4:30, but the 'Cats got no closer than nine points the rest of the quarter.
- The Retrievers led 42-29 through 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
- UMBC extended the advantage to 16 points, 47-31, at 8:10 of the fourth quarter.
- UNH went on an 8-1 run that started with DeChent's three-point play at 7:52 and ended with her layup at 5:52 to make it 48-39. Camryn Fauria (North Attleborough, Mass.) made a 3-pointer between those baskets.
- Another three-point play by DeChent sliced the difference to eight points, 50-42, at 4:25.
- Yarborough responded with a layup at 3:53 and the Retrievers maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- DeChent has 1,003 career points with a split of 957 points in 55 games at UNH and 46 in 24 games at the University of Rhode Island.
- She was a perfect 6-for-6 at the foul line and scored 10 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter.
- DeChent's three assists and two steals were also team highs.
- Melero Sabat scored 10 points for the third time this season and she has scored in double digits four times overall.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH had a 31-30 rebounding advantage that included 9-8 on the offensive glass, and with that a 6-5 edge in second-chance points.
- There were two ties and one lead change in the game.
- UNH led by as many as six points (three times) and UMBC's largest lead was 17.
- UMBC had a 36-24 scoring edge in the paint.
