UNH Topples Binghamton Behind DeChent's 23 Points

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior guard Eva DeChent (Westchester, N.Y.) scored a game-high 23 points to lead the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to a 67-48 victory against Binghamton University at Lundholm Gym on Thursday night.
DeChent, who made 8 of 13 field goal attempts and was 6-for-7 at the foul line, also led all players in both assists (six) and steals (four).
Senior forward Lucia Melero Sabat (Barcelona, Spain) finished with 13 points – on 5 of 7 shooting – and team-leading seven rebounds. Junior guard Maggie Cavanaugh (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) had nine points, three rebounds and three assists, while sophomore guard Elizabeth Lavoie (Hampstead, N.H.) recorded nine points on three 3-pointers, as well as four rebounds and two assists.
Binghamton was led by Bella Pucci (12 points) and Kendall Bennett (10 points, eight rebounds).
UNH improves to 9-19 overall and 3-12 in America East. The Bearcats, who entered the game tied for second place in the America East standings, are now 18-10, 10-5.

FIRST QUARTER
- Binghamton led 11-4 midway through the first quarter and inched ahead, 16-8, at 2:32.
- Melero Sabat made a layup at 1:02 and Kenzie Matulonis (Raynham, Mass.) drove to the rim for a layup at 1:17 to trim the deficit to 16-12.
- Neither team scored again in the opening frame.
SECOND QUARTER
- UNH scored six consecutive points on a layup by Averie Harding (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) at 8:33, pair of DeChent free throws at 8:07 and Cavanaugh jumper from the left elbow at 7:09 to level the score 20-20.
- The Bearcats edged back in front, 27-23, at 4:32.
- Lavoie hit back-to-back 3-pointers at 3:45 and 2:30 to give UNH its first lead of the game, 29-27.
- Cavanaugh's eight-foot pull-up jumper on the left wing gave the Wildcats a 31-29 lead with 23 seconds on the clock and the home team led by that score at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
- Binghamton scored the first two points of the second half to tie the score, but Camryn Fauria (North Attleborough, Mass.) hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to spark a 6-0 run that gave UNH a 37-31 lead.
- UNH went on a 9-0 run to extend a three-point lead to 48-36 at 1:46. Cavanaugh ignited the run with a fastbreak layup and DeChent scored the next five points.
- Bennett's layup stopped the run at 1:20, but Melero and Fauria both went 2-for-2 at the foul line to extend the margin to 52-38 with 21 seconds on the clock.
- Carletta Bennett beat the buzzer with a putback to advance the score to 52-40.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Three-pointers by Lavoie at 6:26 and Cavanaugh at 5:30 gave the Wildcats a 62-46 lead.
- Binghamton inched within 62-48 at 4:26 but did not score again the rest of the game.
- UNH continued to build its lead on layups by DeChent at 2:41 and 1:01, and Matulonis closed the scoring with a foul shot in the closing minute.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- UNH recorded a season-high .615 shooting percentage as the Wildcats made 24 of 39 field goal attempts.
- New Hampshire's strong shooting night extended to 3-point range, where the 'Cats shot 50% (7-14), and the foul line – 80% (12-15).
- This marked the 11th time this season and 21st career that DeChent scored 20+ points in a game.
- DeChent moved up to 20th on UNH's career points leaderboard at 1,035. She surpassed Kelly Butterfield (1981-85), who finished with 1,030 career points.
- Prior to the game, DeChent was presented a game ball in recognition of scoring her 1,000th career point Feb. 14.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH outscored Binghamton 30-22 in the paint and 9-6 in fast break points.
- New Hampshire outscored the visitors 36-19 in the second half with a breakdown of 21-11 in the third quarter and 15-8 in the fourth.
