Cavanaugh Scores 16 Points in 55-47 Loss at NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. – Junior guard Maggie Cavanaugh (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) scored a team-high 16 points but the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team was defeated 55-47 by NJIT at the Joel and Diane Bloom Events Center on Thursday night.
Cavanaugh, who shot 8 of 14 from the floor, also led the Wildcats in both rebounds (seven) and assists (four). Junior guard Eva DeChent (Westchester, N.Y.) also scored in double digits with 13 points.
Cavanaugh, grad student guard Kenzie Matulonis (Raynham, Mass.) and sophomore guard Elizabeth Lavoie (Hampstead, N.H.) recorded two blocks apiece as the 'Cats finished with a season high of nine.
NJIT was led by the duo of Allison Cannon (17 points) and Alejandra Zuniga (16).
UNH moves to 8-16 overall and 2-9 in America East. NJIT is now 15-10, 6-6.

FIRST QUARTER
- There were six tied and one lead change in the opening 10 minutes.
- UNH jumped out to a 5-0 lead two minutes into the game on a driving layup and 3-pointer by DeChent.
- NJIT went on a 12-4 run to inch ahead, 12-9, at 3:06.
- UNH forged ties at 12, 14 and 16, the last of which was scored by Cavanaugh on an offensive rebound with one second on the clock.
SECOND QUARTER
- The Wildcats scored the first six points of the second quarter to build its largest lead of the game, 22-16, on a pair of DeChent foul shots at 8:27.
- NJIT answered with an 11-4 run to regain the lead, 27-26, at 3:52.
- Back-to-back layups by Lucia Melero Sabat (Barcelona, Spain) and Cavanaugh put UNH back in front, 30-27, at 1:26.
- The Highlanders scored the last four points to take a 31-30 lead into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
- NJIT slowly extended its lead in the third quarter and built a nine-point advantage, 43-34, at 2:26.
- The home team led by that nine-point margin, 45-36, through 30 minutes as the Highlanders outscored UNH 14-6 in the third quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
- NJIT extended the advantage to double digits, 47-36, at 7:51.
- The Wildcats trimmed the deficit to 49-45 on a 3-pointer by Matulonis, layup by Carolina Williams (Valatie, N.Y.) and another layup by Cavanaugh at 3:36.
- Camryn Fauria (North Attleborough, Mass.) also made it a four-point game, 51-47, at 1:59.
- NJIT made 1 of 2 free throws on consecutive trips to the line to inch ahead 53-47 with 29 seconds remaining.
- UNH missed a 3-pointer with 19 seconds on the clock, the Highlanders secured the defensive rebound and made two foul shots with 14 seconds to play to close out the scoring 55-47.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- DeChent has 988 career points, including 942 as a UNH Wildcat.
- The two blocks marked career highs for both Cavanaugh and Matulonis.
- Lavoie matched her high of two blocks.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH outscored NJIT 32-26 in the paint.
- Both teams blocked nine shots.
- NJIT finished with a 42-34 rebounding advantage that included 14-9 on the offensive glass.
- UNH had the 8-6 scoring edge in second chance points, however, and also had an 11-7 edge in fast break points.
