Cavanaugh Records 15 Points, Nine Rebounds in OT Loss to Bryant

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior guard Maggie Cavanaugh (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) scored 15 points and tied her career high of nine rebounds in the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team's 51-45 overtime loss against Bryant University in Lundholm Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Cavanaugh netted most of her points at the foul line, where she made 11 of 13 attempts. She also had four steals.
Junior guard Eva DeChent (Westchester, N.Y.) scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Bryant's leading scorer was Maranda Nyborg with 14 points. Mia Mancini and Mimi Rubio both put up 11 points.
UNH moves to 8-14 overall and 2-7 in America East. Bryant advances to 15-7 overall, 5-4 AE.

FIRST QUARTER
- Two made free throws by Cavanaugh put the first points on the board at 6:26 to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead.
- DeChent drove to the basket to put UNH up 4-2 at 4:28.
- A layup by DeChent ended Bryant's 7-0 run and lifted UNH within three points, 9-6, at 1:38.
- Cavanaugh sank both free throws with 17 seconds on the clock to close the first quarter, 11-8, making it a one possession game.
SECOND QUARTER
- The Bulldogs opened with a 3-pointer at 8:21 to give them a 14-8 edge.
- Carolina Williams (Valatie, N.Y.) ended Bryant's 10-0 run with a 3-pointer after being left wide open in the corner to trim the deficit to 21-11 at 2:23.
- UNH headed into the locker room down 24-11 at the half.
THIRD QUARTER
- Camryn Fauria (North Attleborough, Mass.) made a splash by opening the second half with a 3-pointer at 8:44 to lift the Wildcats within 24-14.
- DeChent built off the momentum by completing a contested layup and securing the three-point play at 8:09 to close the gap to 24-17.
- After soaring to grab the defensive rebound, DeChent made a fast break driving layup at 7:04 to once again make it a seven-point game, 26-19.
- Kenzie Matulonis (Raynham, Mass.) picked a Bulldog's pocket, converting the steal into another two points for the 'Cats at 6:13 to bring UNH within five points, 26-21, and forcing Bryant to call a timeout.
- DeChent sank an electric triple, lifting the 'Cats within two points, 26-24, at 5:25.
- A technical foul assessed to Bryant's coach allowed Cavanaugh to secure a free throw for UNH, making it a one-point game, 26-25, at 4:46.
- UNH stormed back in the third – outscoring the visitors 16-8 – to reduce the deficit to five points at the close, 32-27.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Bryant hit a corner 3-pointer at 9:04 to start the last 10 minutes and push the advantage to 35-27.
- A spin cycle by Lucia Melero (Barcelona, Spain) at the basket scored the 'Cats another two points at 6:14 to pull the 'Cats within 37-29.
- UNH outscored the Bulldogs 12-2 in the last 5:30 to force overtime.
- A jumper by Melero once again brought UNH within single digits, 39-31, at 5:24.
- Elizabeth Lavoie (Hampstead, N.H.) snuck around defenders at 4:42 to get to the basket and give UNH two more points, 39-33.
- Cavanaugh shrunk the gap down to three points after completing two free throws at 2:10 to cap a 7-0 run that trimmed the deficit to 39-36.
- After drawing the shooting foul from beyond the 3-point arc, Cavanaugh drained all three free throws to lift the 'Cats within 41-39 with under a minute to play.
- Following a UNH timeout, Cavanaugh's driving layup tied the game at 41 with just 10 seconds left.
- UNH's defense locked up the Bulldogs at the end of regulation to force the game into overtime.
OVERTIME
- Cavanaugh's driving layup put the 'Cats in front for the first time since the first quarter, 43-41, at 4:33.
- A layup by Melero at 1:31 made it a one-point game, 46-45.
- After Bryant hit a jumper with 57 seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs a three-point lead, UNH missed two 3-point attempts the rest of the way and Bryant went 3-for-4 at the foul line to edge away.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Cavanaugh sank a career-high 11 free throws and increased her free throw percentage on the season to 83%.
- In her five starts – the last five games – Cavanaugh is averaging 12.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
- Both UNH games this week went into overtime. The Wildcats were 62-58 victors at UMass Lowell on Thursday (Jan. 29).
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Both teams grabbed 35 rebounds.
- UNH had a 13-6 edge on the offensive glass and recorded a 10-6 edge in second-chance points.
