Storey Surpasses 1,000-point Milestone, ‘Cats Fall to Maine 71-62

Ashley Storey is the 21st Wildcat to tally 1,000 career points.
DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire redshirt senior Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) tallied a team-high 23 points on 11-of-17 shooting, eclipsing the 1,000 career point mark, but the Wildcats' women's basketball team fell to the University of Maine by a score of 71-62 on Wednesday evening in Lundholm Gymnasium.
The Wildcats held a seven point lead in the first quarter, but the Black Bears fought back and the game was a back and forth affair with nine lead changes and eight ties, before Maine eventually took a big lead in the fourth.
The teams were even in the paint, each tallying 36 points. Maine held a slight rebound advantage at 30-27.
NEXT UP: The Wildcats wrap up the regular season this Saturday, February 29 at Binghamton. The game is scheduled for 2 P.M. on ESPN3. HIGHLIGHTS:
- Along with Storey's 23 points she added five rebounds, two assists, a steal, and two blocks.
- Junior Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) chipped in with 11 points, a team-high three steals, and two assists.
- UNH dominated the paint through Storey and junior Maggie Ahearn (Marshfield, Mass.), who tallied 10 points on five-of-seven shooting, with a team-high seven rebounds. Ahearn also had one of UNH's four blocks on the evening.
- New Hampshire began the game with three quick buckets and a three-pointer to give the Wildcats a 9-6 lead with 6:30 to play in the 1st.
- The Wildcats get two buckets to extend their lead as they continue to go on a run to make the score 15- 8 with 3:35 to go.
- UNH carried the lead all the way up until the last two minutes of the quarter when the Black Bears went on a run to take the lead. The quarter ended with an 18-17 advantage for Maine.
- The game was tied at 23 with six minutes to go in the 2nd quarter as the Wildcats and Black Bears traded buckets.
- UMaine took back the lead and continued to hold onto it with a minute to go in the 2nd at 33-30. The game would reach halftime with that same score.
- The two teams continued to trade buckets to open the second half, but UNH would get back out in front after back to back buckets on a three-pointer by Héléna Delaruelle (Enghien-les-bains, France) to tie it at 38-all, and a jumper by Ashley Storey to go up 40-38 with about 5:30 to go in the third.
- A neck-and-neck battle ended with a Maine shot-clock buzzer beater that gave the Black Bears a 50-46 lead after three quarters.
- The Black Bears extended their lead to nine points before the two teams would go back to trading buckets, UMaine's lead alternating between nine and seven points.
- On back to back possession with under five to go, Storey hit a jumper from the free-throw line and a contested layup to reach 20 points in the contest, and 1,000 points in her career, once again cutting means lead to seven.
- The Black Bears went 7-9 from the floor in the fourth and wouldn't led the 'Cats back into the contest, winning by nine.
