UNH Women’s Basketball Outlasts UMBC, 56-51

Storey paces Wildcats with 18 points, seven rebounds.
DURHAM, N.H – Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) recorded a game-high 18 points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to lead the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to Saturday afternoon's 56-51 win against UMBC at Lundholm Gym.
Storey made 7 of 16 field goal attempts, including 2-for-3 from 3-point range, and hit a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining to secure the victory. Her other stats included two blocks and two assists.
Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H) was a perfect 7 of 7 at the foul line and finished with 15 points. Torres also had five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Caroline Soucy (Beverly, Mass.) finished with 12 points and three rebounds.
UBMC was led by Janee'a Summer (16 points, eight rebounds). Jen Gast recorded a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Wildcats tallied 18 points off of UMBC's 21 turnovers to eventually pull away and maintain their lead against the Retrievers. UNH committed only eight turnovers.
New Hampshire improved to 8-16 overall and 5-7 in America East. UMBC fell to 8-15, 4-8.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Helena Delaruelle (Enghien-les-Bains, France) was credited with eight assists and that matched UMBC's team total.
- Maggie Ahearn (Marshfield, Mass.) finished with a career-high four blocks; her previous personal best was one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- There were 11 lead changes and six ties – all in the first half, when neither team led by more than four points.
- Soucy got the Wildcats on the board with a 3-pointer from the top of the arc, followed Torres' three-point play to give UNH its first lead of the game, 6-4, at 7:11 of the first quarter.
- UMBC scored the next four points, however, to go back in front 8-6 midway through the opening quarter.
- The 'Cats regained the lead, 10-9, on a basket by Ivy Gogolin (Hopkinton, Mass.) at 2:49.
- After falling behind 12-10, two free throws from Torres tied it up with 1:11 to go in the first quarter.
- UMBC's Janee'a Summers hit a short jumper in the paint with less than 10 seconds on the clock and that gave the Retrievers a 16-15 lead at the end of one.
- The teams continued to trade scores in the second quarter and New Hampshire went back in front, 24-23, on Storey's layup at 2:47.
- UMBC answered with a 4-0 spurt to go back in front, 27-24, at 1:48 but Storey's 3-pointer tied the game the next possession and Torres sunk a pair of free thrown with three seconds left to send UNH into the locker room with a 29-27 lead.
- Storey led the first half for UNH in points with 10, while Delaruelle led the 'Cats in assists with three and Torres had four steals.
- The 'Cats started off the third quarter strong with a 6-0 run to extend the advantage to 35-27 at 7:02.
- The visitors inched within three points, 35-32, at 4:37 but UNH regained momentum and led 41-34 through 30 minutes.
- UNH opened the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run to build its largst lead of the game, 12 points (48-36) at 8:10.
- UMBC answered with seven consecutive points to slice the deficit to 48-43 at 5:34.
- The Wildcats called time out on the next possession and Delaruelle's diagonal lob pass to Storey on the left blocks resulted in a layup at 4:52.
- Soucy's layup gave the 'Cats a nine-point cushion, 54-45, at 2:17.
- A layup by Lyric Swann lifted the Retrievers within three points, 54-51, with eight seconds to play.
- UMBC, yet to be called for a foul in the fourth quarter, committed a succession of fouls to send Storey to the free throw line for two shots with two seconds remaining. She made both attempts to secure the win.
