Storey Leads ‘Cats to Season Sweep of Hawks

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) went 2-for-2 from three-point range tallying a game-high 21 points as the University of New Hampshire women's basketball took down the Hartford Hawks by a score of 64-55 on Wednesday evening.
New Hampshire took care of the ball with a +8 turnover margin, causing 22 Hartford turnovers and scoring 27 points off of those turnovers. They also grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and tallied 13 points off second-chance opportunities, to Hartford's two.
The Wildcats have now won two in a row and are up to 6-7 in the conference, sitting one win outside of the top four, while Hartford falls to 0-14 in America East play.
NEXT UP: The Wildcats play two straight home games before one final road game to wrap up the regular season; on Saturday they host UAlbany for Senior Day and America East Spread Respect day on February 22 at 12 P.M. HIGHLIGHTS:
- Storey ended the night at 8-of-18 shooting, five rebounds, three assists and a steal. Storey also drew a team-high six fouls, making three free-throws on the night.
- Fellow senior Caroline Soucy (Beverly, Mass.) had a big fourth quarter, tallying 10 points with two big three-pointers, putting her total on the night to 12 points. She was a team-high +17 on the night.
- Juniors Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) and Maggie Ahearn (Marshfield, Mass.) each tallied 11 points in the contest; Torres grabbed three steals and dished two assists on no turnovers, while Ahearn grabbed a team-high three offensive boards and eight total, along with a team-high two blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- New Hampshire began the game with two quick buckets off an offensive rebound and a steal to lead 4-0, but a quick three-pointer from Hartford put the deficit back to just one.
- After UNH put the lead back to three points at 6-3 another Hartford three-pointer tied the game back up with five minutes to go in the first.
- The two teams would trade leads and buckets with Hartford eventually coming out on top at the end of the first frame, 17-14.
- The game was tied three times in the early-going of the second quarter; a fast-break three-pointer from Ashley Storey put the 'Cats back in front for the majority of the quarter.
- The Hawks would go on a run in the final minute and a half and took a one-point lead at halftime, 31-30.
- Hartford extended its lead to four points twice in the third quarter.
- The 'Cats started a 9-0 run with 7:40 left in the third up until the media timeout at 4:54 to go, leading 41-36.
- UNH would extend to its largest lead of the game thus far, 50-43, on a big three-pointer by Storey with 10 seconds to go.
- The Wildcats capped off their best scoring run of the night at 10-0 with a three-pointer by Caroline Soucy with 8:10 remaining in regulation. The 'Cats led by 14 and would on for the 64-55 victory.
