Soucy, Points off Turnovers Lead ‘Cats to Victory at Vermont

Wildcats tally 20 points off turnovers, have 10 different scorers in third straight road win.
BURLINGTON, Vt. – University of New Hampshire senior Caroline Soucy (Beverly, Mass.) tallied a team-high 18 points as the Wildcats defeated the University of Vermont Catamounts by a score of 59-51 at Patrick Gymnasium.
The Wildcats tallied 20 points off of Vermont's 21 turnovers, including eight points off 10 turnovers in the final quarter, to eventually pull away from the Catamounts. UNH only committed six turnovers in the contest.
New Hampshire improves to 7-13 on the season and 4-4 in America East play, Vermont falls to 9-12, 3-5.
NEXT UP: The Wildcats return home this Saturday, February 1 to begin the second half of America East play, with a 12 P.M. tip-off with the UMass Lowell River Hawks on ESPN3.

HIGHLIGHTS:
- Soucy's team-high 18 points came off of 6-of-15 shooting, and 5-of-7 at the free throw line. Soucy also grabbed six rebounds and dished an assist with no turnovers in the contest.
- Junior forward Maggie Ahearn (Marshfield, Mass.) got the start and notched a double-double in the fourth quarter, tallying 11 points and 11 rebounds.
- Junior guard Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) also tallied 11 points, putting the game away with four straight free throws (5-of-10 total from the line). She also drew a team-high seven fouls, had four assists to no turnovers, and grabbed three steals.
- Senior forward Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) notched six points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and a team-high five steals to help propel the Wildcats' transition offense. Storey also had one of UNH's two blocks on the afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Wildcats opened up the game with a quick 5-0 run starting on the first possession of the game, when Héléna Delaruelle (Enghien-les-Bains, France) hitting a three-pointer to open up the scoring.
- Vermont responded with a 7-0 run to lead 7-5, and after trading buckets for the rest of the quarter the Wildcats held a slight 17-16 lead after one quarter.
- A back-and-forth second quarter prevented either team from running away with the contest early; a small run for New Hampshire got the Wildcats their biggest lead of the quarter at 26-21, but Vermont chipped away with a couple stops followed by some scores, and tied the game at 27 with three minutes to play in the half.
- The Wildcats would hold the Catamounts scoreless from then-on, going up 32-27 at halftime on back-to-back scoring possessions from Mariah Gonzalez (Watkins Glen, N.Y.) and Caroline Soucy, hitting a driving layup with four seconds to go.
- The Wildcats opened the third quarter on a 6-2 run with a steal by Ashley Storey turning into a fast-break bucket by Soucy, forcing a Vermont timeout with 6:25 to go.
- Vermont would climb back into it with a big three-pointer after the under-five media break, making the score 40-39, but Soucy responded with a three-pointer of her own to re-extend UNH's lead to four points.
- A back-and-forth end to the third quarter made the score 45-42 Wildcats.
- The Catamounts opened the fourth with a quick pair of freethrows to cut the lead to one, but then a three minute scoring drought kept the score at 45-44 until another UNH foul put Vermont at the line; Sarah Wells hit both shots to give UVM its first lead since the first quarter, 46-45.
- Sophomore forward Ivy Gogolin (Hopkinton, Mass.) retook the lead on two made free throws of her own; with the lead reclaimed, the Wildcats forced three straight turnovers from Vermont, two on back-to-back offensive fouls, and a dribble-drive layup by Amanda Torres brought the score up to 51-46.
- Vermont had one final chance to climb back into the game, hitting a big three-pointer with 29 seconds left to cut UNH's lead back down to just four points, 55-51.
- The Catamounts would attempt to trade free throws with threes, but Torres hit four straight free throws in the final 24 seconds to seal the victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Ahearn's double-double was her first of the 2019-20 season, and the third of her career; her last double-double came in 2018 vs. Holy Cross.
- The game was Storey's fourth of the season in which she tallied 10 or more rebounds.
- New Hampshire outrebounded UVM 36-33 overall, 19-6 on the offensive glass. New Hampshire came into the game ranked fifth in the conference in offensive rebounds per game.
- New Hampshire is 3-3 this season when outrebounding the opponent.
- All seven of UNH's wins this season have come when the Wildcats tally less turnovers than their opponent.
- New Hampshire has won three road games in a row, for the first time since the 2017-18 season when the Wildcats rattled off three conference wins in early January at Binghamton, Vermont, and a one-point victory at Stony Brook.
