Hopkins' 23 Points Propels UNH to 77-69 Win at Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Josh Hopkins (Greensboro, N.C.) matched his career high of 23 points to lead the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team to Saturday afternoon's 77-69 road win against Binghamton University at Events Center.
Hopkins made 9 of 13 field goal attempts, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range, and hit two free throws with 16.1 seconds remaining to help secure the victory by pushing the advantage to 76-69.
Marque Maultsby (Raleigh, N.C.) also matched his personal best with 16 points; he hit 7 of 9 field goals with a pair of 3's. Sean Sutherlin (New Brighton, Minn.) finished with 15 points and eight rebounds while Jayden Martinez (Cibolo, Texas) had 12 and a game-high nine rebounds.
Binghamton was led by Sam Sessoms (28 points) and George Tinsley (13).
UNH won its second consecutive game to record its 10th win of the season (10-9 overall record) and level its America East conference mark at 3-3. Binghamton is now 8-12, 2-5.

FIRST HALF
* There were three ties in the opening 5:30 of the game as Binghamton led 7-5 at the first media timeout at 14:28.
* Sutherlin drove down the lane for a game-tying dunk at 13:10, but the Bearcats scored the next five points to fuel a 7-2 run to build a 14-9 advantage at 11:13.
* Hopkins and Maultsby hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cap an 8-3 spurt that tied the score, 17-17, at 8:05.
* Binghamton responded with seven consecutive points to ignite a 10-3 run that gave the home team a 27-20 lead at 5:39.
* Layups by Hopkins and Maultsby were followed by Sutherlin's pull-up jumper at the left elbow to lift UNH within 27-26 at 2:25.
* Sutherlin drove for a layup and 1:20 and Martinez hit a pair of free throws with 34.5 seconds on the clock to forge the fourth tie of the half, 30-30.
* Sessoms' layup with 6.5 seconds left sent the Bearcats into the locker room with a 32-30 lead.
SECOND HALF
* Richard Caldwell, Jr. and Brenton Mills hit consecutive 3-pointers 33 seconds apart to quickly extend the advantage to 38-30.
* With UNH trailing 46-38, Mark Carbone (Wethersfield, Conn.) made a 3-pointer from the right corner to spark a 7-0 run that lifted the Wildcats within one point, 46-45, at 12:24.
* Maultsby's driving layup once again made it a one-point deficit and then Hopkins hit a corner 3-ball to give UNH a 50-48 lead; it marked the visitor's first lead since 5-4 at 16:08 of the first half.
* With the score tied at 57, Martinez scored on the right blocks and then Hopkins drilled a 3-pointer to give the Wildcats a five-point lead at 7:12; the Bearcats never pulled even -- or regained the lead -- the rest of the way.
* Carbone's four-point play extended the margin to 68-62 at 5:31
* Binghamton closed within 68-67, but Chris Lester (Barrington, Ill.) made a reverse layup and Maultsby hit a pull-up jumper from the left elbow with the shot clock winding down to push the margin to 72-67 with 1:07 to play.
* Martinez hit the front end of two 1-and-1's at the foul line, and the Bearcats also made a pair of free throws to advance the score to 74-69 with 28.5 seconds remaining.
* After a defensive stop by the Wildcats, Hopkins swished in the front end of the 1-and-1 and also hit the second free throw to give New Hampshire a 77-69 advantage with 16.1 seconds to go.
UNH NOTEBOOK
* Hopkins has scored a personal-best 23 points three times -- twice at Binghamton's Events Center. He also netted 23 last January in this building and finished with 23 at Florida International this past November.
* This marked the fifth time this season that Hopkins was UNH's leading scorer.
* Maultsby matched his career high of 16 points established just 10 days earlier vs. UAlbany.
* Maultsby and Carbone tied for the team high with three assists.
* Maultsby, Lester and Martinez each had two steals.
* This is the Wildcats' second two-game win streak of the season.
* UNH is now 1-8 when trailing at halftime.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
* New Hampshire recorded its second-best field goal percentage (52.6%; 30-57) and second-best 3-point field goal percentage (43.8%; 7-16) of the season.
* UNH matched its season low of nine turnovers.
* The Wildcats limited Binghamton to a .353 field goal percentage (12-34), including 27.8% from 3-point range (5-18), in the second half.
* UNH netted 47 second-half points on the strength of a .581 field goal percentage (18-31) and .667 3-point percentage (4-6). The Wildcats also committed just two second-half turnovers.
* New Hampshire recorded a 39-36 rebounding advantage.
* Binghamton utilized its 14-9 edge on the offensive glass into a 10-8 edge in second-chance points.
* The Wildcats outscored the Bearcats 32-24 in the paint.
