UNH women’s basketball topples UMBC, 72-63

BALTIMORE – Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) recorded 16 points and a career-high eight assists to lead the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to Saturday afternoon's 72-63 win against UMBC at the UMBC Event Center.
Torres was a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line, including six in the final 65 seconds to help secure the victory. She also shot 50 percent (4-8) from the floor, had three rebounds and two steals. Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) led four Wildcat double-digit scorers with 17 points. Storey made 8 of 17 field goal attempts, including 1-for-2 from 3-point range, and also had four rebounds.
Caroline Soucy (Beverly, Mass.) finished with 15 points and six rebounds. Ivy Gogolin (Hopkinton, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds.
UMBC was led by Te'yjah Oliver (24 points) and Janee'a Summers (16).
UNH won its second consecutive game to improve to 6-12 overall and 3-3 in America East. UMBC is now 4-12, 0-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UNH took the largest lead of the first quarter, 17-10, on Gogolin's layup at 1:04.
- The Retrievers closed the first quarter on a 5-0 run to pull within 17-15.
- Soucey and Gogolin hit a pair of free throws to extend the advantage to 21-15 at 7:13 of the second quarter.
- After the home team closed within four points, Héléna Delaruelle (Enghien-les-Bains, France) hit a jumper and a 3-pointer to spark a 7-0 run that gave the Wildcats a 28-17 lead at 2:48 of the second quarter.
- UMBC responded with seven consecutive points to trim the deficit to four points, 28-24, at 1:18.
- The teams traded baskets in the last minute to send UNH into halftime with a 30-26 lead.
- The Retrievers opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 32-30, at 7:44.
- The teams traded scores and the 'Cats eventually regained the lead, 42-41, on a Brooke Kane (Derry, N.H.) layup at 2:29 of the third frame.
- UMBC closed the quarter on a 9-4 spurt to take a 50-46 advantage through 30 minutes.
- New Hampshire opened the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run – sparked by Soucy's seven points – to take a 56-52 lead at 7:44; the Wildcats stayed in front the rest of the way following Storey's 3-pointer made it 53-52 at 8:09.
- UMBC narrowed the margin to one point twice (58-57 and 60-59), but the 'Cats answered with a 6-0 run to build a 66-59 advantage at 1:05.
- Including those two free throws at 1:05, Torres was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line down the stretch to secure the win.
