UNH Faces Merrimack, NDSU in TD Bank Classic

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's soccer team began its season 1-1-0 in the opening weekend of regular season play, and now head to Burlington, Vermont for the annual TD Bank Classic. The Wildcats will face two opponents, Merrimack College and North Dakota State University, for the first time in program history.
The Series with Merrimack/NDSU
• Merrimack has one game under its belt as a DI soccer program, a 0-1 loss to Hartford.
• Perennial opponents on the ice in men's and women's hockey, this will be the first meeting on the soccer pitch between the Wildcats and the Warriors
• This will also be the first meeting of the Wildcats and the Bison in women's soccer. Most recently, New Hampshire has faced off with North Dakota State in women's basketball in the 2018-19 season and will face them again on the hardwood in the 2019-20 season.
Last Time Out
• New Hampshire went 1-1-0 in its first weekend of regular season play falling in overtime to Rhode Island, 0-1, and defeating Sacred Heart 3-0.
• The Wildcats defense did not allow a regulation goal in its first two games this season, and only one total.
• Freshmen Whitney Wiley (Vienna, Va.) and Shayna Salis (Bedford, N.H.) tallied New Hampshire's first goals of the season in the 3-0 victory over Sacred Heart. Wiley, a starter, tallied two in the contest, including the game-winner. Salis came off the bench in the 22nd minute and immediately stole the ball in the midfield zone, scoring just seconds later.
The State of New Hampshire
• New Hampshire enters the 2019 season picked fifth in the America East preseason coaches poll, with one first-place vote.
• The Wildcats carry a large number of returning, experienced student-athletes, with 19 members of the 2018 roster returning, including 10 seniors.
• Among the returning seniors are last season's leading goal scorers: Ally Reynolds (Weymouth, Mass.) with nine points on four goals and an assist, Kaylan Williams (Marion, Ind.) with eight points on three goals, two assists, and Liz Lane (Porter, Maine) who tallied three straight game-winning goals late in the season, along with an assist for seven points on the season.
• Other key returners for the Wildcats include senior back and team captain Caitlyn Keenan (Bow, N.H.) who appeared in 12 of UNH's 18 games, coming back from a nose injury early in the season, and junior captain Casey Peterson (Clifton, Va.). The midfield/forward combo tallied a four-point game against Rhode Island with a goal and two assists.
• All-Conference Second-Teamer Megan Rumbold (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) tallied a late game-tying goal against Northeastern last season, and was a consistent member of the UNH backline, starting all 18 games.
• Also joining Rumbold from last year's backline are seniors Maddie Murdick (Burlington, Conn.), Caroline Wysocki (Agawam, Mass.) and Caitlyn Keenan.
A New Face In Net
• Sophomore goalkeeper Cat Sheppard (Nesconset, N.Y.) got her first career start when UNH faced the Rhode Island Rams in its season opener. Sheppard did not face a shot on target in the first half, but stopped all five in the second half to repel the URI attack.
• Sheppard posted her first clean sheet against Sacred Heart in the second game of the season, stopping both SHU shots on goal in the 3-0 victory.
• So far in her first two starts Sheppard sits at a .875 save% and a 0.50 GAA, stopping seven of eight opposing shots on target.
Wiley Runs Wild
• Freshman midfield/forward Whitney Wiley was named the America East Rookie of the Week for the first week of the regular season. Wiley tallied two goals against Sacred Heart, including the game winner, as she beat the defense into the 18-yard box and collected two perfect through-balls from senior Ally Reynolds.
Making History
• Senior Kaylan Williams tallied an assist on every goal in the victory against Sacred Heart, with two secondary assists and a primary give-and-go assist to Shayna Salis. The program record for assists in a single game is three, originally set by Ellen Weinberg in 1987 and 1989. Williams is now the eighth Wildcat tied for that record.
Scouting Merrimack
• The Warriors (North Andover, Mass.) began their DI era this past weekend against Hartford.
• Merrimack comes into the TD Bank Classic off a 0-1 loss to Hartford.
• The Warriors went 8-7-2 in DII play last season in the NE10 conference.
• Merrimack has seen split time in net with two goalkeepers playing a half in their season opener. Senior Erin Fulton started the game in net, stopping five of six shots on net in the first half. Junior Megan Langlois took over in the second half stopping all three shots on net.
Scouting NDSU
• The Bison (Fargo, N.D.) come into the weekend with a 1-0-1 record on the season, defeating Saint Mary's 1-0 and drawing with Montana, 1-1.
• Both of NDSU's goals this season have come in the first half; they've allowed one goal in the second.
• Both goals came from senior forward Mariah Haberle who leads the team with four points.
• In net, the Bison have started senior Monica Polgar, who so far this season has a .944 save percentage and 0.45 GAA, stopping 17 of 18 shots on net.
