Reed Nets 18 in 62-53 Loss at Maine

BANGOR, Maine – Jordan Reed (Lucas, Texas) scored a team-high 18 points as the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team was defeated 62-53 by the University of Maine at Cross Insurance Center on Sunday afternoon.
Reed made 6 of 10 field goal attempts and tied his career high of five 3-pointers (on eight attempts from beyond the arc). He also had six rebounds and three assists in 38 minutes.
David Watkins (Dorchester, Mass.) finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Josh Hopkins (Greensboro, N.C.) had nine points and team-high four assists in 39 minutes. Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) had a team-high seven rebounds, seven points and three assists.
Maine was led by Vilgot Larsson (23 points, six rebounds) and Sergio El Darwich, who had 18 points, four rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks in playing all 40 minutes. Andrew Fleming was limited to five points on 1-for-11 shooting from the floor; he had a game-high 11 rebounds.
UNH is now 3-18 overall and 1-7 in America East. Maine moves to 5-18, 3-5.

* New Hampshire returns to action Feb. 6 (7 p.m.) at UMass Lowell. The Wildcats' next home game is Feb. 9 (1 p.m.) vs. Binghamton University.

FIRST HALF
* UNH raced out to an 8-0 lead in the opening two minutes as Reed hit a 3-pointer from the left corner, Watkins hit a driving layup and Reed completed a three-point play.
* Maine responded with a 13-0 run to take a 13-8 lead at 14:45.
* Each of the Wildcats' next four scores were on 3-pointers as the 'Cats took a 20-17 lead at 8:13.
* Reed began the flurry with his second 3-ball from the left wing. After a Black Bears' field goal made it 15-11, Guadarrama and Hopkins hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give UNH a 17-15 lead. Hopkins connected again from long range for the 20-17 lead.
* Maine answered with a 10-1 run to build a 27-21 advantage through 19 minutes.
* Guadarrama's putback beat the buzzer to lift New Hampshire within 27-23 heading into halftime.
SECOND HALF
* Reed's third 3-pointer capped an 8-1 run that put the Wildcats back in front, 29-28, at 17:43.
* Maine responded immediately with a 3-ball, however, to regain a 31-29 lead. That was the start of a 9-4 spurt that gave the home team a 37-33 advantage at 15:13.
* Trailing 39-33, UNH went on another 3-ball binge to fuel at 15-6 run that gave the Wildcats a 48-45 lead. Reed's pair of 3-pointers lifted the 'Cats within 41-39 at 11:48. Maine answered with two short field goals, but then Watkins, Marque Maultsby (Raleigh, N.C.) and Watkins again made three consecutive 3's to give New Hampshire the three-point lead at 8:10.
* Vincent Eze replied with back-to-back baskets in the paint, and his only four points of the game gave the Black Bears a 49-48 lead at 7:17 that would not be relinquished.
* Maultsby's second 3-pointer trimmed UNH's deficit to 53-51 at 2:45.
* Terion Moss made a layup and foul shot to extend the margin to five points at 2:06.
* Guadarrama's free throws lifted the 'Cats back within three points, 56-53, with 1:14 remaining. After a defensive stop, Watkins' game-tying 3-point attempt went off the rim with 27 seconds left.
* The Black Bears, who made 6 of 13 free throws the first 39 minutes of the game, were a perfect 6-for-6 in the last 23.1 seconds to secure the win.

* New Hampshire has a 73-108 lifetime record against Maine. The 181 games are more than any other opponent.
UNH NOTEBOOK
* UNH tied its season high with 13 3-pointers. The Wildcats made 50 percent of its 3-balls in the second half (8-16).
