DURHAM, N.H. – Two student-athletes and a coach on the 2026-27 University of New Hampshire men's basketball team are competing in two different FIBA tournaments during the month of July.
Junior transfer Kaleb Myers (Bluefield, Nicaragua) will represent his homeland and assistant coach Luis Guzman is the associate head coach of the Nicaragua team. Guzman was previously an assistant coach on the Dominican Republic team from 2016-24.
Rising sophomore Giannos Xanthopoulos (Zografou, Greece) will play for the Greek U20 National Team at FIBA U20 Eurobasket 2026 tournament from July 11-19 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
The quest to Qatar 2027 continues for Nicaragua at this week's qualifiers in Window 3 of the FIBA World Basketball 2027 Qualifiers from July 2 through July 6.
Window 3 will determine the 12 national teams that advance to the second round of the Americas Qualifiers. So far, six countries have already secured a spot and six more look to accomplish that goal. Nicaragua, currently with an 0-4 record in Group A, needs to win its July 3 game vs. Mexico – at Zacatecas City, Mexico – to have a chance to advance.
Myers, Guzman and the rest of the Nicaragua team, which climbed two spots in the most recent FIBA Men World Ranking presented by NIKE, ends Window 3 against the Dominican Republic at Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) on July 6.
Xanthopoulos, a 6-foot-10, 220-pound forward/center, is on the Greece team in Group C of the U20 EuroBasket tourney with Belgium, Croatia and Spain. The group phase begins July 11 against Croatia, continues July 12 vs. Belgium and concludes July 13 vs. Spain.
Every team advances to the Round of 16 on July 15 and will be seeded based on results in the group phase. The tourney continues July 16 with the quarterfinals, followed by July 18 semifinals and the final on July 19. There will be classification games following the Round of 16 to determine the final standings for all 16 teams.
As a UNH freshman this past season, Xanthopoulos played in 29 of 30 games with averages of 1.9 rebounds and 1.7 points in 6.6 minutes per game.
Coach Guzman, who was recognized by Silver Waves Media on its list of 100 Rising Stars: Men's Mid-Majors Assistant Coaches in Spring 2024, has spent three seasons on the UNH bench as an assistant coach.
Myers, who is only the second Division I men's basketball player out of Nicaragua, is a 6-8 forward who played at St. Thomas University in the 2025-26 season, when he averaged 16.0 points on a .582 field goal percentage and pulled down 8.6 rebounds per game in 28.3 minutes per game.
FIBA Qualifier games are streamed live on Courtside 1891 with on-demand replays available.
