Guadarrama, Hopkins Score 12 Points Apiece in 72-62 Loss at UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. – Josh Hopkins (Greensboro, N.C.) and Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) scored 12 points apiece and Jordan Reed (Lucas, Texas) almost recorded a double-double, but the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team was defeated 72-62 by UMass Lowell at the Costello Athletic Center on Wednesday night.
Reed finished with 11 points and team-high nine rebounds, which matched his career high. Chris Lester (Barrington, Ill.) also pulled down a personal-best nine boards and scored eight points; he had a team-high three assists. Kijana Love (Cibolo, Texas) chipped in with a season-high nine points.
UMass Lowell was led by Christian Lutete (18 points, 10 rebounds), Shawn Jones (17 pts) and Joey Glynn (13).
UNH is now 3-19 overall and 1-8 in America East. UMass Lowell, which avenged last month's loss in Durham to the Wildcats, moves to 13-11, 5-4.

* New Hampshire returns to action Feb. 9 at home vs. Binghamton University. Start time at Lundholm Gym is 1 p.m.

FIRST HALF
* UNH opened an 8-4 lead in the opening three minutes of the game behind a Marque Maultsby (Raleigh, N.C.) 3-pointer and Reed's three-point play.
* Trailing 10-6, UMass Lowell scored five consecutive points to take an 11-10 lead.
* The Wildcats called a 30-second timeout and Maultsby responded immediately with a pull-up floater, then Hopkins hit a 3-ball from the right wing to put the 'Cats back in front, 15-11 at 14:06.
* With UNH leading 17-16, Guadarrama and Reed connected from beyond the 3-point arc to help push the advantage to 23-17 at 10:43.
* Lester's right baseline jumper to match that six-point lead, 25-19, midway through the first half.
* The home team closed within 25-24 before Elijah Jordan (Orlando, Fla.) made a 3-ball from the right wing at 7:34.
* UML scored the next six points to regain the lead, 30-28, at 5:56.
* Reed hit a step-back jumper outside the left elbow to forge the third tie of the game, 30-30, at 3:35.
* The River Hawks went on a 12-0 run the next 2 minutes, 25 seconds to build a 42-30 lead, and the home team took a 44-32 advantage into the locker room.
SECOND HALF
* UML held a 57-41 lead midway through the second half and went on a 5-0 spurt to push the margin to 21 points.
* Love hit a pair of 3-pointers within a minute to trim the margin to 64-47 at 8:31.
* With UNH trailing 68-49, Guadarrama's layup and Reed's 3-ball reduced the deficit to 68-54 at 3:47.
* The River Hawks missed the front end of the 1-and-1 at the foul line, but the 'Cats missed a 3-pointer and UML converted a three-point play to take a 71-54 lead at 2:51.
* New Hampshire ended the game on an 8-1 run.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
* New Hampshire has a 9-3 lifetime record against UMass Lowell. The Wildcats are now 5-1 in road games vs. the River Hawks; the previous five matchups were at Tsongas Center.
UNH NOTEBOOK
* Lester surpassed his previous career high of eight rebounds; he tallied that mark twice, most recently vs. Boston University back in November.
* Reed matched his personal best of nine rebounds established Jan. 23 at Hartford.
* Guadarrama's 12 points marked his highest total against a Division I opponent and were two fewer than his career high of 14 points vs. Rivier.
* Love surpassed his previous season high of eight points against Rivier. He scored a career-high 11 points in December 2016 vs. Daniel Webster.
* UNH attempted a season-high 35 3-pointers and shot 25.7 percent (9-35) from beyond the arc.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
* There were three ties and five lead changes in the game -- all in the first half.
* UMass Lowell shot 49.0 percent (24-49) from the floor, including 59.3 percent (16-27) in the first half.
* UNH made 24 of 66 field goal attempts (36.4%).
* The River Hawks outscored their guests 19-5 at the foul line. UML attempted 28 free throws in comparison to UNH's 12.
* UML had the 42-34 rebounding advantage, but the 'Cats had a 12-7 edge on the offensive glass with a 12-10 margin in second-chance points.
* UMass Lowell recorded the edge in the paint, 34-22.
* New Hampshire committed a season-low five turnovers. UML had six.
