Gallo Notches Double-Double as ‘Cats Defeat Lyons 89-44

The freshman forward tallied 19 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman forward Sam Gallo (Northford, Conn.) posted her first career double-double scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 boards as the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team took down the Wheaton College Lyons by a score of 89-44 on Wednesday evening.
The Wildcats, who finished with a lead of 45 points, led by as much as 48 in the game and held the Lyons to just seven first half points. The Wildcats improve to 2-3 on the season, the Lyons are at 3-2.
The game was UNH's Pediatric Cancer Awareness Night; prior to tip off, pediatric cancer survivor Olive Chisholm, a second-grader from York, Maine, delivered the game ball to the officials.

HIGHLIGHTS:
- Gallo was just one-point shy of a 20-point performance but was one of four Wildcats to hit double digits in scoring on the night. Along with her points and rebounds, Gallo dished two assists and grabbed two steals. Gallo missed just one shot in the contest and shot 9-for-10 overall.
- Sophomore Kali Grimm (Norwood Young America, Minn.) was another spark off the bench for the Wildcats, tying her career high of 15 points off 4-7 shooting, 2-4 from behind the arc, 5-5 at the free throw line, and a steal and assist.
- Senior Caroline Soucy (Beverly, Mass.) tallied 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds in just 15 minutes on the floor. Soucy also had an assists and two steals, and shot 2-3 from behind the three-point line.
- The final 10+ point Wildcat was freshman Brooke Kane (Derry, N.H.) with 10 points; she hit a three-pointer in the third quarter and went 3-3 at the charity stripe. Kane also tallied one assist, one steal, and one block.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Wildcats opened the game on a 23-0 run in the first quarter, holding Wheaton scoreless until the 1:30 mark of the opening frame. The first quarter ended with a 25-5 lead for UNH.
- New Hampshire held Wheaton to just two second quarter points, ending the half on 10-0 run.
- The Wildcats came out in the second half with their hands in the passing lane scoring two quick baskets off of turnovers in the first two minutes of the half. The Lyons bounced back and notched 19 points in the third quarter but UNH kept the lead at 44 points entering the fourth.
- Wheaton cut the lead down to 38 twice early in the fourth but UNH ended the game up 45.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Freshman Héléna Delaruelle (Enghien-les-Bains, France) led the team with five assists on the night, had a game-high three steals, and tallied one blocked shot.
- Soucy led the team in rebounds with seven.
- Freshman Melissa Girondin (Levallois-Perret, France) tallied UNH's third block of the evening; off the bench Girondin had five points and three rebounds, along with four assists.
- 57 of UNH's 89 points came off the bench.
- The Wildcats outscored the Lyons 32-5 off turnovers, 42-12 in the paint, and 16-6 on second chance opportunities.
- New Hampshire shot 55.6% from the field in the third quarter and 49.3% overall.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- UNH had four scorers in double figures for the first time since this past January against Binghamton (Jan. 5, 2019, 62-71 loss.)
- Sam Gallo has UNH's first double-double of the season.
- 89 points and 49 team rebounds are both team highs for UNH this season.
