Wildcats looking to build momentum off previous meets.
DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's cross country team, coming off a big win at the New England Championships two weeks ago, begins its final prep for the championship season as they head to Central Connecticut State for the annual mini meet.
The meet will feature a 3k women's race, shorter than the 5k that the team will run at the conference championship meet. Fifth-year senior Shannon Murdock (Exeter, N.H.) returns to the CCSU Mini Meet, where she last competed in the 3k in the 2017 season; she finished first overall with a time of 10:08.6.
Murdock will lead a team of Wildcats looking to round into form one weekend ahead of the America East Cross Country Championships held in Albany, N.Y. next Saturday, November 2nd.
MEET INFO:
Date: October 25, 2019 – 3:30 P.M.
Location: Stanley Quarter Park – New Britain, Conn.
Distance: 3k
LAST TIME OUT:
Shannon Murdock finished first overall leading the women's cross country team to a first place finish in the New England Inter-Collegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) cross country championship, the team's fifth championship in seven years, edging out Dartmouth with 63 points to the Big Green's 65.
Murdock won the 5k with a time of 17:36.7, a new personal best. Murdock's win was the first individual New England cross country championship win for UNH since Elinor Purrier '18, who won it in 2014.
Two other Wildcats finished in the top 10 to help the Wildcats' team score stay low at 130 points; senior Meg Champagne (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) finished third overall with a time of 17:58.1, and junior Elisabeth Danis (Nottingham, N.H.) took fifth at 17:54.7, a few seconds off her career best, but her fastest 5k time as a Wildcat.
RANKED IN THE REGION:
The women's cross country team entered the USTFCCCA Northeast Region top-15 earlier this season; after a strong finish at the Coast to Coast Invitational the 'Cats moved up to #11 in the region; their highest position this season was #7 after their finish in the Paul Short Run gold 6k. They currently sit at #8 after a weekend off.
FROM THE COACH:
"[Shannon] Murdock won this race two years ago; she's coming off a win at New England's, so she's in strong position going into this meet. We're excited to get out there and race again after New England's; it's always the process of building on previous meets, and we're looking to building momentum off the Paul Short Run and New England's. This race gives us an opportunity to run fast and hard on a short course, and we're looking forward to that opportunity."
