DURHAM, N.H. - After a 0-1-1 weekend at Vermont, the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team returns home for the beginning of a home-and-home series with #6 Northeastern. The Huskies took game one of the three-game season series by a score of 3-1 back in October at the Whittemore Center.
The Wildcats host game one on Friday, November 9 at 5 P.M. before traveling to Boston for game two on Saturday, November 10 at 2 P.M. For tickets to Friday's home contest, visit UNHWildcats.com or by call (603) 862-4000.
The Series: New Hampshire vs. Northeastern
This storied rivalry has seen 142 meetings, including 17 post-season matchups in the ECAC and Hockey East playoffs. The Wildcats currently have an 81-52-9 when facing the Huskies, with Northeastern holding a recent edge over the Wildcats, with a 4-1-0 record against UNH in their last five meetings, including two-game series at Northeastern last February in the Hockey East quarterfinals.
Last Time Out:
New Hampshire traveled up to Burlington, Vermont last weekend for a two-game series with the Catamounts. The Wildcats found themselves in the midst of a six-game losing skid after dropping the first game on a late third period power play goal.
UNH snapped that streak in the following game tallying two goals in a four-goal first period and held off the Vermont offense for the final two periods to secure a conference point. Freshman forward Lindsey Dumond (Hampton, N.H.) tallied her first collegiate goal to open up the scoring, and after two Vermont goals, junior defender Tori Howran (Bancroft, Ontario) tallied the game-tying goal just 60 seconds later.
The State Of New Hampshire
- New Hampshire was picked seventh in the Hockey East preseason poll released on September 20th. The Wildcats finished fifth in Hockey East in the 2017-18 regular season.
- From last year's roster, the Wildcats return 20 players with six newcomers. Despite losing five starters, UNH returns their three top scorers from the 2017-18 season. The group of juniors Meghara McManus (Milton, Mass.), Carlee Turner (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Taylor Wenczkowski (Rochester, N.H.) led the team last season with 20 points each.
- Also among those returning are goaltenders Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) and Kyra Smith (Littleton, Colo.). Boutilier had a breakout season her freshman year, breaking the UNH record for saves made in a single season (886) and backstopped the 'Cats in 32 of their 36 games played last season. Boutilier finished her freshman season with a 12-13-7 record. Smith saw action in the other four starts last season with a 2-2-0 record, with big wins over Northeastern and UConn in which she made 29 and 27 saves, respectively.
Players to Watch
- Junior Nicole Dunbar (Coto De Caza, Calif.) leads the team with five points three goals and two assists. One of her goals this season has come on the power play.
- Five other Wildcats have tallied a second-best four points on the season: Freshman Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ontario) and junior Carlee Turner (Scottsdale, Ariz.) were the first two locked at four points; Turner has one goal and three assists, her goal being UNH's first game-winner of the season, and Martin has tallied a team-leading four helpers on the season, two of which came in the home opener against UConn.
- Junior Tori Howran and sophomore Grace Middleton (Midland, Mich.) are also at four points; Howran now has two goals and assists each, and Middleton has tallied one goal and three assists.
- Senior Devan Taylor (North Billerica, Mass.) rounds out the four-pointers with a goal and three assists, and junior Taylor Wenczkowski (Rochester, N.H.) has all three of her points on the season off of goals - one of which came on the power play.
Mind the Net
Sophomore Ava Boutilier returns for her second season after setting a new record for saves in a single season (886) in her rookie season. Boutilier holds a 1-5-2 record so far in the 2018-19 season, with a .924 save% and a 2.23 GAA.
Senior Kyra Smith made her season debut against #9 Northeastern back in October; Smith has a 0-2-0 record on the year, but has posted a .950 save% and a 1.53 GAA.
Scouting #6 Northeastern
- The Huskies (Boston, Mass.) enter the weekend series with an overall record of 8-1-1, and a conference-best 7-0-1.
- Northeastern's only loss this season was to Colgate, dropping the first game of their two-game series 3-2.
- The Huskies' are undefeated on the road with a 4-0-1.
- Northeastern reached #6 in both national polls this week; their highest ranking of the season.
- NU's leading scorer is Veronika Petty with six goals a team-high eight assists. Kasidy Anderson follows close behind with six goals and two assists.
- The Huskies have evenly split goaltender time between Aerin Frankel and Brittany Bugalski.
- Aerin Frankel has only allowed four goals all season for a GAA of 0.80, and has made 122 saves for a SV% of .968. So far this season she has posted an overall record of 4-1-0 with three shutouts. Frankel was named Hockey East Player of the Month for the month of October.
- Brittany Bugalski has allowed eight goals for a 1.59 GAA, and has made 123 saves and a SV% of .939; her record on the year is 4-0-1.
