'Cats Returns to D.C. to Tip Off vs. American on Nov. 16

New Hampshire has a 1-3 lifetime record against American University and that includes 1-0 on the road. This is the fourth consecutive year the Wildcats and Eagles tip off. Last year in Lundholm Gym, the Eagles squandered a 19-point second-half lead but ended the game on a 7-0 run to record a 74-70 victory. In the most recent meeting in Washington, D.C. (Dec. 6, 2016), the Wildcats were 80-70 victors.
UNH is 2-1 and looking to improve to 3-1 for the first time since the 2015-16 season.
Three freshmen are averaging double-digit points with forward Jayden Martinez leading all Wildcats at 12.3 points per game. Nick Guadarrama, another forward, ranks third at 11.3 ppg and guard Marque Maultsby ranks fourth at 10.0 ppg.
UNH is led by 14th-year head coach Bill Herrion. With 169 wins at New Hampshire's helm, he ranks second in victories behind only Gerry Friel (185).
Herrion's teams are predicated on defense. UNH ended the 2017-18 season atop the America East leaderboard in four statistics – defense field goal percentage (.432), total rebounds (1,191), rebounding (38.4) and defensive rebounding (26.9). The Wildcats were No. 2 in scoring defense (67.3 ppg) and 3-point defense FG percentage (.332).
Last year, UNH broke the school record for 3-pointers attempted in a single season (776); the 252 3-pointers made ranked No. 3 in program history. Through three games this year, the 'Cats are 34-for-83 from 3-point range.
