DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's basketball team continues conference play at Binghamton University on Wednesday, Jan. 10, with a 7 P.M. tip off on ESPN3.
The Wildcats are coming off a 66-53 road loss to the Albany Great Danes, putting the 'Cats at a 1-1 conference record going into the weekend.
THE STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
Seniors Brittni Lai and Carlie Pogue scored 20 and 17 points respectively as the Wildcats fell at Albany, 66-53, on Saturday. Senior Olivia Healy scored eight points and led the Wildcats with nine rebounds.
UNH is now 10-5 overall and 1-1 in America East. Albany is 12-3 and 1-1. The game was a clash between last year's America East regular season champion in New Hampshire and tournament champion Albany.
UNH leads America East in defense, allowing 56.1 points a game. Binghamton is third at 58.3 points allowed. Binghamton is second in scoring at 68.6 points a game and UNH is sixth at 62.1.
Four Wildcats average in double figures in scoring, led by Pogue at 15.4 points per game. Healy is at 12.6 points. Lai averages 11.1 points a game and Fogarty averages 11. Fogarty leads in rebounds at 6.1 a game, followed by Pogue at 5.9, Healy at 5.7 and Aliza Simpson at 4.3.
UNH plays three of its next four games on the road. After Binghamton, the Wildcats play UMass Lowell at home on Monday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m. in their "Reading Challenge Game." UNH is at Vermont on Thursday, Jan. 18 and at Stony Brook on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m.
The Wildcats went 26-6 overall last season and were 15-1 in the America East Conference to grab their first outright regular season league title. They return a veteran group – led by Carlie Pogue, the reigning America East Player of the Year, and three other players who won league postseason honors.
The returning players combined to score 55.7 points of the 61.3 points UNH scored per game last year. Pogue averaged 16.6 points and 7.9 rebounds a game to lead the team in both categories and pull down the program's first Player of the Year honors in nearly three decades.
UNH was picked to finish sixth in last year's America East preseason coaches' poll. Coach Maureen Magarity's squad was picked to finish first in the preseason poll this year.
Pogue was also a first-team All-Conference pick last year. Kat Fogarty averaged 10.4 points and 5.8 rebounds and was named second-team All-Conference. Brittni Lai and Olivia Healy both were named to the All-Conference third team. Lai averaged 11.1 points and 3.3 assists a game and Healy scored 8.7 points and pulled down 5.7 rebounds.
The 2016-17 Wildcats set a program record for wins (the previous mark was 23 in 1982-83) and with their regular season league title earned a spot in the WNIT.
SCOUTING BINGHAMTON
The Bearcats opened the America East portion of their schedule with their sixth straight win, a 66-62 overtime decision at Maine on Saturday. Senior guard Imani Watkins, the leading scorer in America East, had 23 points to lead Binghamton over Maine. Sophomore guard Kai Moon had 14 points and seven rebounds, junior forward Rebecca Carmody had 12 points and senior forward Alyssa James had eight points and nine rebounds.
The Bearcats beat Dartmouth, 80-64, at home on Dec. 30 heading into league play. Binghamton's win streak is its longest since the 2003-04 season. The Bearcats are 10-4 overall for their best start since 2005-06.
Binghamton leads the league with 41.9 rebounds a game. UNH is seventh with 34.7 rebounds a game. The Bearcats have made 112 three-pointers, which is second-best in the league. UNH is last in the league in three-pointers with 45. Binghamton averages 68.6 points a game and allows 58.3.
Watkins is averaging 21.1 points a game to lead the league. She's averaging 4.7 rebounds a game and has made 37 three-pointers. Moon averages 11.8 points and 4.9 rebounds a game and James is at 10.1 points and 8.6 rebounds.
UNH took a pair of games from the Bearcats last season: 70-62 at Binghamton on Jan. 14 and 76-69 in Durham on Feb. 12.
Linda Cimino, a 2001 graduate of Adelphi, is in her fourth season as Binghamton head coach. She led the Bearcats to a 13-17 overall record and 8-8 mark in America East last season.

LUCKY LUNDHOLM: The Wildcats are 6-0 at home in Lundholm Gymnasium this season. They were 14-2 in their Lundholm games last season.
THE COACH: Maureen Magarity is in her eighth season as head coach of the Wildcats. She directed the program to a 26-6 record and its first outright America East regular season championship in 2016-17. The team won as many as 20 games for only the third time in its history and first since the 1983-84 season. The program's previous record for wins was 23 in 1982-83.
One of last season's featured victories was a 50-44 decision over Maine in Lundholm Gymnasium on Jan. 19. That win was Magarity's 100th as head coach of the Wildcats. She owns a 121-105 overall record at UNH.
Magarity ranks fourth in all-time coaching wins at UNH. Kathy Sanborn (1986-97) was 170-127 in her 11 seasons. Cecelia DeMarco (1977-86) went 136-86 in her nine seasons and Sue Johnson (1997-2007) was 133-150 in her 10 seasons.
Magarity earned America East Coach of the Year honors last season. She was also a finalist for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year award.
CARLIE'S CLIMBING: Carlie Pogue, the America East Player of the Year last season, has broken into the Top 10 on UNH's career scoring list. She is at No. 9 on the list with 1,305 career points. Danielle Clark (2003-07) is at No. 8 with 1,331. Pogue is No. 12 on the rebounding list with 620. Orsi Farkas (1996-2000) is at No. 11 with 635 and Aubrey Danen (1998-03) is at No. 10 with 666.
SIMPSON ON THE MOVE: Aliza Simpson has moved into the Top 20 in a couple of career categories. She's No. 16 in three-point field goals with 79. Adriane Domanski is next on the list at No. 15 with 87 and Marcie Lane (1991-94) is at No. 14 with 95. Simpson is No. 15 in assists with 232. Christine Gulas (1982-84) is No. 14 with 264.

"All four are tremendous leaders and each brings something different to the group," Magarity said. "Kat and Peyton were our captains last year and obviously did a great job and were deserving again. All four of them stood out as leaders during the offseason and we're excited to have them as our captains."
TITLE TIME: Last year's America East regular season championship was UNH's first outright league title. The Wildcats shared the championship of what was then the Seaboard Conference with Northeastern in 1984-85. Both teams had 4-1 records in the league.
