Conference Play Continues on the Road at Albany (2 P.M.)

The 'Cats are 1-0 as they travel to face the Great Danes
DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire women's basketball team, currently on a three game winning streak, continues conference play on Saturday as they travel to face the Albany Great Danes at 2 P.M. on ESPN3.
THE STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
Senior Kat Fogarty scored 16 points and senior Olivia Healy had 11 points, nine of them in the fourth quarter, and nine rebounds, to lead the Wildcats to a 56-51 win over UMBC in their America East opener on Wednesday in Lundholm Gymnasium.
The Wildcats improved to 10-4 and are 1-0 in the league. UNH has lowered its defensive scoring number to 55.4 points per game and leads the league in that category.
Four Wildcats average in double figures in scoring, led by Pogue at 15.3 points per game. Healy is at 12.9 points. Fogarty averages 11.6 points per game and Lai is at 10.5 points per game. Fogarty leads in rebounds at 6.1 a game, followed by Pogue at 5.8, Healy at 5.5 and Aliza Simpson at 4.4.
UNH plays four of its next five games on the road. After games at Albany on Saturday and Binghamton on Wednesday, Jan. 10, the Wildcats play UMass Lowell at home on Monday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m. in their "Reading Challenge Game." UNH is at Vermont on Thursday, Jan. 18 and Stony Brook on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m.
The Wildcats went 26-6 overall last season and were 15-1 in the America East Conference to grab their first outright regular season league title. They return a veteran group – led by Carlie Pogue, the reigning America East Player of the Year, and three other players who won league postseason honors.
The returning players combined to score 55.7 points of the 61.3 points UNH scored per game last year. Pogue averaged 16.6 points and 7.9 rebounds a game to lead the team in both categories and pull down the program's first Player of the Year honors in nearly three decades.
UNH was picked to finish sixth in last year's America East preseason coaches' poll. Coach Maureen Magarity's squad was picked to finish first in the preseason poll this year.
Pogue was also a first-team All-Conference pick last year. Fogarty averaged 10.4 points and 5.8 rebounds and was named second-team All-Conference. Brittni Lai and Olivia Healy both were named to the All-Conference third team. Lai averaged 11.1 points and 3.3 assists a game and Healy scored 8.7 points and pulled down 5.7 rebounds.
The 2016-17 Wildcats set a program record for wins (the previous mark was 23 in 1982-83) and with their regular season league title earned a spot in the WNIT.
SCOUTING ALBANY
The Great Danes have won the last six America East tournament championships and put together an 11-2 record in the non-conference portion of their schedule heading into Wednesday night's league opener at Hartford. The hometown Hawks jumped on the Great Danes early on the way to a 70-55 victory. Albany had won 13 straight games against Hartford.
Hartford led 22-12 after the first period and 46-22 at the half. Albany missed all 11 of its three-point attempts in the first half and was three-for-19 from behind the arc for the game. The Great Danes had nine turnovers in the first quarter and 27 for the game. Hartford improved to 9-5 for the season.
Senior forward Tiana-Jo Carter led Albany with 12 points. Senior forward Jessica Fequiere was held to one-for-nine shooting and missed six three-pointers. She had six points and six rebounds.
Fequiere averages 18.9 points and six rebounds a game to lead Albany. Carter averages 10.3 points and 4.7 rebounds a game. Sophomore guard Mackenzie Trpcic averages 8.4 points and 2.8 rebounds a game and leads the league at 5.6 assists per game.
UNH and Albany split a pair of games last season. The Wildcats trailed. 27-14 after one period, led at the half and were behind again going into the fourth period before pulling out a 71-58 win in Durham on Jan. 11. The win snapped an 11-game losing streak to Albany. The Great Danes won the rematch, 64-55, in Albany on Feb. 6. That was UNH's only loss in regular season conference play last year.
Joanna Bernabei-McNamee coached Albany to its sixth straight tournament title in her first year as head coach last season. The Great Danes were 21-12 overall and 12-4 in the league.

THE COACH: Maureen Magarity is in her eighth season as head coach of the Wildcats. She directed the program to a 26-6 record and its first outright America East regular season championship in 2016-17. The team won as many as 20 games for only the third time in its history and first since the 1983-84 season. The program's previous record for wins was 23 in 1982-83.
One of last season's featured victories was a 50-44 decision over Maine in Lundholm Gymnasium on Jan. 19. That win was Magarity's 100th as head coach of the Wildcats. She owns a 121-104 overall record at UNH.
Magarity ranks fourth in all-time coaching wins at UNH. Kathy Sanborn (1986-97) was 170-127 in her 11 seasons. Cecelia DeMarco (1977-86) went 136-86 in her nine seasons and Sue Johnson (1997-2007) was 133-150 in her 10 seasons.
Magarity earned America East Coach of the Year honors last season. She was also a finalist for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year award.
CARLIE'S CLIMBING: Carlie Pogue, the America East Player of the Year last season, has broken into the Top 10 on UNH's career scoring list. She is at No. 9 on the list with 1,288 career points. Danielle Clark (2003-07) is at No. 8 with 1,331. Pogue is No. 12 on the rebounding list with 613. Orsi Farkas (1996-2000) is at No. 11 with 635 and Aubrey Danen (1998-03) is at No. 10 with 666.
SIMPSON ON THE MOVE: Aliza Simpson has moved into the Top 20 in a couple of career categories. She's No. 16 in three-point field goals with 79. Adriane Domanski is next on the list at No. 15 with 87 and Marcie Lane (1991-94) is at No. 14 with 95. Simpson is also No. 16 in assists with 230. Christine Gulas (1982-84) is No. 14 with 264.
