UNH Gets America East Schedule Off to Nice Start With 56-51 Victory
DURHAM, N.H. – Senior forward Kat Fogarty (Westminster, Mass.) scored 16 points and senior forward Olivia Healy (Reading, Mass.) led a fourth-quarter charge to lead the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to a 56-51 win over UMBC in its America East Conference opener on Wednesday in Lundholm Gymnasium.
The Wildcats improved to 10-4 overall and are 6-0 at home this season. UMBC, which has struggled with injuries through the first half of the season, is 1-13.
UNH, which is looking to defend its America East regular season championship, hits the road for its next two games. Coach Maureen Magarity's team plays at the University at Albany on Saturday at 2 p.m. and at Binghamton on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The Wildcats trailed UMBC, 37-25, with less than three minutes left in the third period and were down 38-33 after three quarters. They outscored the Retrievers 23-13 in the fourth quarter.
Healy scored 11 points and had nine rebounds in the game. She scored nine straight UNH points in one run in the fourth quarter.

HIGHLIGHTS
Wednesday's game mirrored last year's conference opener. In that one, UNH trailed Stony Brook 14-2 after one period and 25-10 at the half. The Wildcats cut the lead to 39-32 after three periods and then outscored Stony Brook 17-7 in the fourth period on the way to a 49-46 win.
UNH went on from there to post a 15-1 record in the league for its first outright America East regular season championship.
Senior center Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) returned to the lineup Wednesday after missing a game with an injury and scored 13 points, pulled down five rebounds and blocked two shots.
Fogarty made six of her eight foul shots and had three rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A Laura Castaldo three-pointer gave UMBC a 37-25 lead with 2:36 left in the third quarter. A 6-0 run by UNH helped get the gap down to 38-33 by the end of the third period.
Fogarty opened the fourth period with a jumper and from there Healy scored the next nine UNH points. UNH trailed 45-44 after Healy's final basket.
The Wildcats took their first lead of the game at 52-49 on a putback and foul shot by senior guard Aliza Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) with 1:08 to play.
UMBC answered with a layup with 45 seconds to go for 52-51 and senior guard Brittni Lai (Irvington, N.Y.) drove the middle for a layup to push the lead back to 54-51 with 19 seconds left. Simpson closed out the game with a pair of foul shots.
