DURHAM, N.H. – Head coach Maureen Magarity has signed a contract extension to lead the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team through the 2021-22 season, director of athletics Marty Scarano announced Thursday.
Magarity led the team to its best overall year in 2016-17 and she is about to enter her eighth season as the leader of the program.
Last season, UNH set a program record for wins, posted its best-ever won-lost record at 26-6 and earned its first outright America East Conference regular season championship.
"We're very pleased that we're at a place where we've extended Coach Magarity's contract five more years," Scarano said. "Maureen is obviously one of the bright, young talented coaches in the nation. Her skills are highly sought after and at UNH we benefit every day from having her with us."
Magarity is equally happy with the renewed commitment.
"I'm thrilled to continue to be a part of the UNH family," she said. "Myself, my staff and the players obviously had an amazing season. I'm just so appreciative to Marty and President Huddleston to continue to have this opportunity to coach these terrific young women at such an amazing institution. I'm really excited about the season that's ahead of us and I'm also really excited about the future of the program."
The Wildcats open the 2017-18 season with a game at Xavier of the Big East on Saturday, Nov. 11. They play Boston University in their home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 15.
Season tickets for the coming year will be available starting Monday by calling 603-862-4000 or online at www.unhwildcats.com.
The 26 wins last year were three more than the previous high (1982-83).
For the coming year, the team returns seven seniors – led by America East Conference Player of the Year Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) - and has its sights set high.
"We achieved a lot of amazing accomplishments by winning the regular season, which is really hard to do, and by playing in the WNIT, which was a great experience, but obviously we didn't end the season the way we wanted to," Magarity said. "So absolutely with the senior class we have coming back and the younger players, that's our goal."
The Wildcats advanced to the America East semifinals last season. They have never played in the league title game and will be looking again to reach the championship in the upcoming season.
"Right from the start when we get back here and even in the summer when we had them in for workouts, that's what we talk about," Magarity said. "We have such a huge senior class and I know that everybody's on the same page. Keeping that main goal as our No. 1 team goal, that's what we want this year."
UNH had a myriad of highlights last season, leading to numerous post-season accolades.
Magarity hit the 100-win career mark with a 50-44 victory over Maine in Lundholm Gymnasium on Jan. 19. The Wildcats collected 20 wins for only the third time in history and the first since 1983-84. They finished a program-best 15-1 during the regular season in America East.
After the season, Magarity was named America East Coach of the Year. She was the second UNH coach accorded that honor and first since 1993-94.
