HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wildcats broke on to the board first at 8:01 of the opening stanza as Michael McNicholas (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) notched his tenth goal of the season. The play came during a 5-on-3 advantage and was set up by Tyler Kelleher (Longmeadow, Mass.). He gained control of the puck along the boards and fed it to Matias Cleland (Longmont, Colo.) at the top of the faceoff circle. He sent a pass down low to McNicholas who one-timed it into the back of the net.
The River Hawks tied the game at 8:54 of the first with a goal by Jake Kamrass. Dylan Zink started the play with a pass to Nick Marin. He served the puck up to Kamrass who was able to punch it past UNH netminder Danny Tirone (Trumbull, Conn.) and into the net.
UML increased its lead at 15:33 of the first period on a goal by Mattias Goransson. Joe Gambardella and Michael Kapla got assists on the play as Goransson put away the rebound of Kapla's shot from the point.
On a power play in the second period, the River Hawks gained a 3-1 lead on a goal by Gambardella at 8:53. C.J. Smith played a pass down to Goransson who fired a shot on net. Tirone made the initial save, however Gambardella was there to poke the puck in.
Cleland cut UNH's deficit to one at 18:41 of the second period with his second goal of the season. Kelleher stripped a River Hawk of the puck and skated into the Lowell zone with it. He dished a pass to Cleland who blasted a one-timer into the net from the top of the faceoff circle.
UMass Lowell regained a two-goal lead at 2:36 of the third period by Smith. Kapla sent a pass to John Edwardh who fired a shot that Tirone saved, but Smith was at the back door waiting and put it away. The River Hawks made it 5-2 at 3:44 of the third on a goal by Ryan Lohin. Colin O'Neill and Kenny Hausinger tallied assists on the play. Lowell made it 6-2 at 7:11 of the third period on a goal by Nick Master. Marin and Tyler Mueller got assists on the play. Lowell tallied two more goals in the final two minutes to make it 8-2 as the final score.
