- The No. 11/12 University of New Hampshire men's hockey team (6-3-1, 3-2-1 HEA) will return to the Whittemore Center on Friday, Nov. 17, to take on Boston College (6-5-1, 6-1-0 HEA) at 7:00 p.m. The game will be "Movember Night." The Wildcats are first in the league in scoring defense with 2.20 goals allowed per game, while the Eagles are fourth with 2.67 goals allowed per contest. UNH is ranked second in Hockey East with a .244 power play percentage and BC is 11th with a .128 percentage. The Wildcats are third in the conference with a .896 penalty kill percentage and BC is fourth with a .831 percentage.
Nationally Ranked: The Wildcats are ranked No. 11 in the latest USCHO.com Division I Poll as the Wildcats were No. 9 in this poll last week. UNH is No. 12 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine College Hockey Poll after being ranked No. 8 last week.
Strong Offense & Defense: The Wildcats have outscored its opponents by a 32-22 margin so far this season for the second best scoring margin in the conference. UNH is second in Hockey East with 3.20 goals scored per game. The Wildcats are also second in the conference with a .244 power play percentage. UNH has already had 13 different goal scorers with 17 players with at least one point. The Wildcats have also been outstanding defensively as they are first in Hockey East and are ninth in the nation with 2.20 goals allowed per game.
Tirone 10 Saves From 3,000: Senior assistant captain Danny Tirone (Trumbull, Conn.) is just 10 saves away from being only the second UNH goalie to ever post 3,000 career saves. He is second all-time at UNH with 2,990 career saves. Kevin Regan (2005-2008) is first with 3,235 saves. Tirone has played in 102 career games which are second all-time in program history for a goalie. Regan holds the record with 112 games. His 44 career wins are tied for seventh, his 2.81 goals against average is seventh and his .913 save percentage is sixth. This season, Tirone has been named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week and the Goaltender of the Month for October. His 2.21 goals against average is third in Hockey East and his .928 save percentage is second. Tirone's 1,137 saves last year led the nation and was third all-time at UNH.
Number 91: The 2017-2018 season is the 91st year of men's hockey at UNH. The program has a record of 1,228-925-149.
Umile in 28th & Final Season At UNH: UNH head coach Dick Umile is the second longest tenured coach at their current institution as he is now in his 28th season with the 'Cats. Rick Gotkin (Mercyhurst) is going into his 30th season. Umile has a 592-356-109 all-time record at UNH. The 592 wins are third among active Division I coaches.
Freshmen Off To Great Start: The Wildcats have three freshmen in the top five on the team in points. Freshman defenseman Benton Maass (Elk River, Minn.) leads the team with nine assists and is tied for first with 10 points. His nine assists are tied for third in Hockey East. His 10 points are tied for second in the league for points by a defenseman, while his 10 points are tied for second by a freshman in the conference. Freshman defenseman Max Gildon (Plano, Texas) leads the team with six goals, while his 10 points are tied for first. His six goals are the most by a freshman in the league. He is also tied for second in the league for points by a defenseman and also for a rookie. Gildon has been named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week once and won Rookie of the Month for October. Freshman forward Charlie Kelleher (Longmeadow, Mass.) is tied for fifth on the team with seven points with one goal and six assists.
Chanter Named Captain: Senior defenseman Dylan Chanter (Armstrong, British Columbia) is the team captain for the 2017-2018 season. Chanter played in 37 games a year ago as a key member of the defense.
Three Coaches, 402 Points: Umile, Stewart and Souza are each members of the Century Club for the men's hockey program. Souza tallied 156 points (66g, 90a), Umile 144 points (60g, 84a) and Stewart notched 102 points (51g, 51a).
Wildcats Drafted by NHL Teams: Five current Wildcats are NHL draft picks. Senior Shane Eiserman (Ottawa-2014, Round #4, Pick #100), junior Marcus Vela (San Jose-2015, Round #7, Pick #190), and freshmen Benton Maass (Washington, 2017, Round #6, #182), Max Gildon (Florida-2017, Round #3, #66) and Mike Robinson (San Jose-2015, Round #3, #86) have all been drafted by NHL organizations.
Wildcats Through and Through: Head coach Dick Umile ('72) and associate head coaches Glenn Stewart ('94) and Mike Souza ('00) are all graduates and former players of UNH. Goaltenders coach Brian Foster ('10) was an All-American at UNH. Assistant AD for Hockey Operations Colin Shank ('05) is also a graduate of UNH.
Granite State Connection: Four Wildcats are from the Granite State; junior Chris Miller of Windham, sophomore Nick Nonis of Hampton Falls, sophomore Joe Lazzaro of Hampstead and freshman Mike Robinson of Bedford.
