Storey Leads 'Cats to Comeback Win in League Opener
1/4/2017 3:16:00 PM | Women's Basketball
DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore forward Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) delivered the first double-double of her career and the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team rallied for its biggest comeback win in two years as the Wildcats opened the America East portion of their schedule with a 49-46 victory over Stony Brook on Tuesday afternoon in Lundholm Gymnasium.
A loud and large Education Day crowd of 1,306 – mostly made up of middle-schoolers from the Oyster River and Somersworth school districts – watched the Wildcats win their fifth straight game and 10th in their last 11. UNH improved to 11-3 for the season, matching its best start since the 1998-99 season.
The Wildcats play five-time defending America East champion Albany at home on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. on ESPN3 in their next game.
Stony Brook falls to 7-7 overall and is 0-1 in the league.
Storey finished with a season-high 13 points and matched her career high with 10 rebounds.
Junior guard Aliza Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) and junior forward Kat Fogarty (Westminster, Mass.) joined Storey in double figures with 11 points each.

HIGHLIGHTS
Down by 18 points at 33-15 with 7:50 left in the third period, the Wildcats began their comeback.
Simpson scored all 11 of her points in the third period to spur the rally. UNH outscored Stony Brook 22-14 in the third period to cut a 15-point deficit at the half to 39-32 with one period remaining.
Multiple players fueled the final Wildcat charge in the fourth period. Junior guard Brittni Lai (Irvington, N.Y.) scored all eight of her points in the final period.
Lai drove down the middle for a layup to give UNH a 47-46 lead with 17 seconds remaining. Fogarty blocked a shot underneath with eight seconds left and made two foul shots at the other end for 49-46.
It was the biggest comeback for the Wildcats since they knocked off Northeastern 63-62 on Dec. 22, 2014 when Kristen Anderson, now a senior, nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer. UNH had trailed 46-26 with 15:42 left in the second half of that game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wildcats had a rough first half. They didn't make a field goal in the first period and when Davion Wingate banked a three-point shot at the buzzer it was 14-2 Stony Brook at the first break.
Fogarty hit a couple of hoops and UNH cut the lead to 14-8 early in the second period. The Seawolves pushed it back to 25-10 at the half. The Wildcats had a 22-14 edge in the third quarter and outscored Stony Brook 17-7 in the fourth.
UNH took its first lead at 45-44 on an Anderson basket in the lane with 2:08 left in the fourth period. Elizabeth Manner's layup put Stony Brook back on top with just under two minutes to go.
The stage was set for UNH's final heroics.
