Schafer Scores Three Times, Women's Lax Falls 12-7 at UMBC

Wildcats Earn No. 4 Seed in America East Tourney
BALTIMORE, Md. – Krissy Schafer (Longmeadow, Mass.) matched her career high of three goals, but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was defeated 12-7 by UMBC in Saturday afternoon's regular-season finale at UMBC Stadium.
Despite the loss, UNH is the No. 4 seed of the upcoming America East Championships and will play top-seeded Stony Brook University in a May 6 (5 p.m.) semifinal at SBU's LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves recorded an 11-4 home win against New Hampshire on April 16.
UNH and UMBC finished tied for third in the America East conference standings. The Retrievers earned the No. 3 seed by virtue of this 12-7 win against the Wildcats.

GAME RECAP
- UMBC scored three goals in the opening three minutes of the game and UNH never got closer than two goals the rest of the way.
- Laura McHoul (Westwood, Mass.) lifted the 'Cats within 3-1 at 22:31 and Schafer's first goal of the game trimmed the deficit to 4-2 at 16:08.
- The Retrievers closed the half with back-to-back goals to take a 6-2 lead into halftime; the shots were even at 14 with the home team holding a slight edge in both ground balls (6-5) and draw controls (6-3).
- Schafer scored second-half goals at 28:31 and 24:30, the latter of which was set up by McHoul, to move the score to 7-4.
- Marissa Gurello (Manorville, N.Y.) potted consecutive goals at 20:03 and 19:11 to once again pull UNH within three goals, 9-6, but UMBC went on a 3-0 spurt the next eight minutes to pull away.
- Devon Croke (Norwell, Mass.) finished a feed from Nicole Grote (Ellicott City, Md.) to close the scoring at 6:25.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- UNH ended the regular season with four consecutive losses. Prior to that, the Wildcats had a three-game win streak.
- New Hampshire recorded a 12-9 shot advantage in the second half to record a 2-23 edge overall.
- UNH has a 12-3 lifetime record against UMBC, but the Retrievers have now won two straight in the series.
