Men’s Track Heads to Colonial Relays and Maine (April 1-2)

DURHAM, N.H.- The University of New Hampshire men's track and field team is set for a busy weekend starting Friday, April 1 when several members head to the College of William & Mary for the 51st Colonial Relays. In addition, on Saturday, April 2, some of the team heads to the University of Maine for a tri meet with UMaine and Bates College.
The 2016 Colonial relays are a three-day event from March 31 to April 2 where 50-plus collegiate programs are invited to participate. Participants for the men's track & field team include senior distance runner Brendan McCarthy (Mansfield, Mass) and junior middle distance runner Drew Piazza (Danvers, Mass).
McCarthy competed in the America East Indoor Championships (Feb. 19-20) where he and other Wildcats placed first in the distance medley relay. He is scheduled to compete in the 5,000-meter run at the 51st Colonial Relays. His personal record in the event was set during the 2014 indoor season with a time of 14:50.36 set at New Englands (Feb. 28-March 1).
Piazza participated in the NCAA Indoor Championships (March 11-12) where he placed ninth in the men's 800-meter preliminaries with a time of 1:47.97 for his first All-American honors. He is slated to participate in the men's 800- and 1500-meter races at the Colonial Relays. He set the school record in the 800-meter race at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational (Jan. 29-30) with a first place finish during his impressive indoor season.
Other men's track & field members are participating in a tri-meet with UMaine and Bates. Members scheduled to participate include freshman middle distance runner William Ulrich (Mineola, N.Y.), freshman distance runner Brett Hoerner (Manchester, N.H.), and sophomore long sprint Thomas Harter (Hampton, N.H.).
Ulrich will compete in the men's 800-meter run. He placed fifth in the men's 800-meter at the NEICAAA Indoor Championships (Feb 26-27) with a time of 1:52.39. He had a pair of top-3 finishes in the conference championships (Feb. 19-20) in the 4x800-meter relays and the 1,000-meter race. This will be Ulrich's first outdoor season at UNH.
Hoerner is scheduled to participate in the men's 1,500-meter race. In the indoor season, he finished third in the men's 1,000-meter event at the NEICAAA Outdoor Championships with a time of 2:25.71. At the 2015 league championships, the freshman finished first in the DMR, second in the 4x800-meter run and the 1,000-meter finals. This is Hoerner's first outdoor season, as well.
Harter placed 15th in the men's 400-meter run at the NEICAAA Indoor Championships this past indoor season. He is slated to compete in the men's 400-meter race at the tri-meet this weekend. The junior was a part of the conference championship 4x400-meter relay team at the 2015 America East Outdoor Championships (May 2-3) last outdoor season.
Another member participating is Daniel Johnson (Lancaster, N.H.) who will participate in four events. Last season, at the America East Outdoor Championships he placed first overall in the decathlon with 6,337 points.
Junior sprinter Andrew McFarland (Nazareth, Pa.) is slated to participate in the 400-meter hurdles. He finished seventh in the America East Outdoor Championships last season in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.72. Most recently in the indoor season, the senior placed third in the preliminary round of the 500-meter run (1:06.03) at the league championships.
