CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Senior Laura Rose Donegan (Melbourne, Australia) finished 17th overall out of 206 athletes to lead the University of New Hampshire women's cross country team to a 10th place finish (275 points) at the Boston Coast-to-Coast meet, Friday afternoon at Boston College.
New Hampshire's 10th place finish was out of the 24 programs competing on the day, including four America East members (University at Albany, Stony Brook University, UMass Lowell, University of Hartford and the University of Maine). UAlbany placed 13th (342 points), Stony Brook 14th (356 points), UMass Lowell earned 16th place (474 points) while Hartford and Maine finished 22nd (678 points) and 24th (731 points), respectively.
"We did not have a good start," said head coach Robert Hoppler. "We ran very well in the second half of the race and fought hard to finish 10th overall. I am very happy with the team's competitive effort today."
The seniors raced well on the afternoon as Donegan ran a 17 minute, 28.0 second 5K race to lead all Wildcats. Amber Short (Keene, N.H.) placed 27th overall, breaking the tape in 17:38.0. Samantha Blais (Lyndeborough, N.H.) and Brianna Boden (Keene, N.H.) placed 74th (18:10.0) and 76th (18:12.0) overall, respectively.
Junior Sarah Keiran (Rowley, Mass.) earned an 84th place finish (18:15.0) followed by freshman Shannon Murdock (Exeter, N.H.) who placed 89th with a time of 18:21.0. Rounding out the top-7 Wildcat finishers was junior Hannah Kimball (Atkinson, N.H.) who collected a 102nd finish (18:30.0).
This meet gives the team a great boost heading into the championship half of the season.
Up next, New Hampshire will compete at the New England Championships (Oct. 10) following a 15-day break from competition.
