ORONO, MAINE – The University of New Hampshire women's cross country team took the top four times on its way to a first place finish in a dual meet at the University of Maine, Friday afternoon.
UNH scored 16 points, defeating Maine (43 points) in the 5K race. The course is familiar to many runners, as the America East Championship was held at Maine last season.
Senior Alex Giese (Franklin, Mass.) placed first overall (19:13) to lead all athletes. Junior Amanda Szymanski (Londonderry, N.H.) collected second place, breaking the tape in 19:22. Third overall was claimed by junior Hannah Kimball (19:39) followed by sophomore Kayla Farren (Nashua, N.H.) who placed fourth (19:41).
Both Giese and Kimball raced on this course in the conference championship last season. The experience gained last year paved the way to a win this time around. Szymanski and Farren both competed well in the race, to solidify the low score, and the victory.
"Very excited about Szymanski and Farren's race," said head coach Robert Hoppler. "This team depth is important going forward looking toward this year's America East Championship."
New Hampshire competes next at the Boston Coast to Coast meet, hosted by Boston College, on Friday, Sept. 25.
