DURHAM, N.H. – Junior tri-captain Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) made nine saves as the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon against the University of Massachusetts at Bremner Field.
The Wildcats hold an overall record of 0-0-2 as the Minutewomen are now 0-1-1 overall.
Borkan currently holds a scoreless streak of 220 minutes in the young 2015 season. Sophomore Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) contributed four shots, one on goal, on the afternoon to lead the team. Classmate Kendra Prince (Ajax, Ontario), junior Lilly Radack (Madbury, N.H.) and senior Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) all added two shots.
The Minutewomen were led by Gabriella Kenyon, who rifled two shots on goal. Cassidy Babin recorded three saves in goal.
The Wildcats began the game with energy as Murray rocketed a shot high just three minutes into the game but Babin was able to punch it over the net with her right hand. On the ensuing corner kick, Prince was able to get a head on Murphy's cross but it went wide left past the front post.
UMass picked up pressure toward the end of the first half as Marissa Milazzo and Kenyon connected on a few passes to set up shots under the 15-minute mark. Borkan made back-to-back saves with 11 minutes to play to keep the score tied at zero.
The Minutewomen continued the pressure in the second frame when Megan Burke touched around a Wildcat defender and got a look from the top of the box but Borkan was in the right position for the save.
With 29-minutes remaining in the half, the 'Cats had the best chance to score when Prince shot a one-timer from a low cross by Murray, but the chance narrowly sailed right of the post.
In overtime, the possession was split for both teams. UMass mustered two shots between both periods as the Wildcats had one chance in the final overtime period. Neither goalie recorded a save.
New Hampshire held advantages in both shots (13-12) and corner kicks (4-2) in the game.
New Hampshire had never started a season with back-to-back ties. The last two-game unbeaten streak at the outset of a season occurred in 2010, when the team began the year 1-0-1. Additionally, there was only one other time the program had two shutouts in the first two games. In 1986, the women's soccer team defeated St. Anselm College, 2-0, and then Boston University, 4-0.
The Wildcats close out the three-game home stand Thursday, Aug. 27 (7 p.m.) when they host the College of Holy Cross on Bremner Field. For the most up-to-date information on the women's soccer program, visit UNHWildcats.com.
