ALBANY, N.Y. – Rachael Nock (Severna Park, Md.) and Laura McHoul (Westwood, Mass.) recorded two points apiece as the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was defeated 16-5 by 19th-ranked University at Albany at John Fallon Field on Saturday afternoon.
UNH is now 3-7 overall and 0-2 in America East while Albany is 8-1, 2-0. UA finished with the edge in shots (27-20), draw controls (13-10) and ground balls (9-7) while also committing fewer turnovers (8-11).
Nock scored two goals and McHoul tallied two assists. Kayleigh Hinkle (Glenelg, Md.), who extended her point streak to 10 games, Marissa Gurello (Manorville, N.Y.) and Laura Puccia (Fairport, N.Y.) netted the other UNH goals. Starting goalkeeper Kate Clancy (Barrington, R.I.) allowed 13 goals and made five saves in 52:30. Sarah Lambert (Auburn, N.H.) yielded three goals and was not credited with a save in her 7:30 relief stint.
Maureen Keggins (3g, 7a) and Dakotah Savitcheff (6g) led Albany's attack. Emma Powlin (2g, 2a) and Rachel Bowles (2a) also finished with multiple points. Courtney Henderson stopped five shots.
The Great Danes opened the game on a 4-0 run and the Wildcats never got closer than three goals the rest of the way. Powlin struck first on a free position at 27:42. Katherine Sweeney scored a player-up goal at 24:54, then Savitcheff and Keggins netted goals 23 seconds apart – at 23:22 and 22:59.
Hinkle finished a feed from McHoul to trim the deficit to 4-1 at 19:32, but the home team responded with goals at 18:20 by Nichole Eamer and at 16:37 by Katherine Sweeney to extend the lead to 6-1.
Nock's unassisted goal made it 6-2 at 14:08, but Savitcheff scored 70 seconds later to reestablish a five-goal margin.
McHoul set up Puccia's goal at 9:38, then Savitcheff scored her third goal of the half at 7:27 to give the Great Danes an 8-3 leading into halftime. She opened the second half scoring with tallies at 26:56 and 20:03 to puck the advantage to 10-3.
UNH inched within 10-4 at 16:13 when Nock converted a free position from the top-left into a goal on a high shot. Carly Wooters (White Plains, N.Y.) won the ensuing draw control and that led to Gurello's shot from the middle of the fan that sailed wide left at 14:40. The 'Cats maintained possession and Puccia's shot from close range went wide right at 14:00. The possession continued and Nock, on a free position from the top of the fan, shot wide right at 12:34. New Hampshire retained possession and Gurello's low shot from the top of the fan trickled past Henderson into the goal to reduce the deficit to 10-5 at 11:57.
Puccia gained possession of the next draw control, but turned the ball over one minute later and Albany closed the game on a 6-0 run the last 10 minutes, including two in the last 75 seconds, to pull away.
New Hampshire returns to action April 1 (7 p.m.) at UMass Lowell. The Wildcats' next home game is April 4 (6 p.m.) against UMBC at Cowell Stadium.
