UMass Lowell Escapes with 1-0 Win Against Men's Soccer on Senior Day

DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire men's soccer team fired eight shots on goal against the University of Massachusetts Lowell, but could not find the back of the net as the Wildcats fell 1-0 Saturday afternoon from Bremner Field on Senior Day.
UNH slips to 5-10-1 overall and 1-5 in America East. UMass Lowell improves to 8-8-1, 4-4-1.
Prior to the start of the match, UNH's five seniors were honored for their commitment and dedication to the men's soccer program. Those recognized were Kevin Andino (Germantown, Md.), Paul Bianchi (Essex, Vt.), Connor Pauley (Londonderry, N.H.), David Schlatter (Marlton, N.J.) and Travis Worra (Lancaster, Pa.).
A goal off the foot of freshman midfielder Jacob Fitzgerald in the 63rd minute proved to be the difference for UML, which was outshot 23-10 in the match. Freshman Austin Kroll stopped all eight shots in goal to earn the shut out for the River Hawks. Worra registered three saves for the 'Cats.
New Hampshire generated the first scoring chance on the match in the 6th minute. Schlatter received a cross inside the 18-yard box. The senior managed to redirect it, but Kroll stood in position to make the save.
The Wildcats continued to press and fired a flurry of shots midway through the first half. Junior midfielder Fazal Nabi (Portland, Maine) struck the post from a shot outside the penalty area. Classmate A.J. Albers (Eagan, Minn.) and Schlatter followed up with shots, but were blocked as UML cleared the zone.
UMass Lowell looked to score the game's first goal in the expiring moments of the first half. However, Worra stopped a trio of shots to keep the game scoreless.
At the end of the first half, the game was deadlocked, 0-0.
UMass Lowell drew first blood with 26:57 left in regulation. Fitzgerald blasted a low shot around the dive of Worra, ricocheting off the right post and in the net unassisted.
The Wildcats ramped up the pressure in order to level the score, outshooting the River Hawks 18-4 in the second half.
UNH's best scoring chance came with 15 minutes left in the match. A skimming shot from sophomore midfielder Christopher Wingate (Høvik, Norway) created a rebound from Kroll. Schlatter crashed the net with a lot shot, but Kroll popped the ball upwards with his legs to make the point-blank save. The senior remained with the play and headed the ball towards net. However, the bid hit the crossbar and the River Hawks booted the ball up the field to preserve their one-goal advantage.
New Hampshire continued to pressure in the waning moments of the half. Despite their efforts, the Wildcats could not find the back of the net as the River Hawks held on for the win.
UNH closes out the regular season Wednesday, Nov. 5 (1:30 p.m.) at the University of Vermont.
