BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of New Hampshire men's soccer team netted a pair of goals to defeat the University of Vermont Wednesday afternoon by a score of 2-0 at Virtue Field in Burlington. Sophomores Christopher Wingate (Hovik, Norway) and Erik Martel (Bedford, N.H.) scored for UNH while keeper Travis Worra (Lancaster, Pa.) picked up a two save shutout.
The win improves UNH to 6-10-1 overall and to 2-5-0 in America East Conference play while Vermont falls to 7-8-2 overall and 2-4-1 in league action.
Wingate got the 'Cats on the board early in the fourth minute of play with his second goal of the season. The play started when senior Paul Bianchi (Essex, Vt.) intercepted a pass by the Vermont defense and dribbled down the sideline with it. He found Wingate charging in and played a pass to him at the top of the box. Wingate controlled the ball, turned and fired a shot past Catamount keeper Conor Leland and into the bottom left corner of the net.
In the 14th minute of play, junior Fazal Nabi (Portland, Maine) kept the offensive pressure coming with a shot that went just high of the net. Senior David Schlatter (Marlton, N.J.) ripped a shot in the 19th minute, but it was wide of the target.
The Catamoutns countered the UNH attack with pressure of their own. In the 28th minute, Vermont's Jaime Miralles fired a shot that went wide of the net. In the 29th minute, Shane Haley fired a shot on target for Vermont, but Worra made the save to keep Vermont off the board.
At the end of the first half, UNH held a 1-0 lead. Vermont held a slight advantage in shots, 5-4.
Miralles attempted to tie the game in the 49th minute for Vermont, but Worra again denied the shot to keep the Catamounts off the board. The Wildcats countered with a pair of corner kicks in the 60th and 61st minute, both taken by Wingate.
In the 69th minute, UNH took a 2-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Martel. The play started with Wingate firing in a corner kick that Nabi connected with, however his attempt was blocked. Martel collected the rebound off the Catamount defender and fired a shot to the low far corner of the net.
After that, the Wildcats buckled down on defense, only allowing one shot through the rest of the second half. At the end of 90 minutes, UNH was victorious, 2-0.
Worra secured his second shutout of the year after making two saves and picking up his fourth win of the season. UVM's Leland did not make a save on the two shots faced. New Hampshire held a one shot advantage in total, 9-8.
With the University at Albany's 1-0 win over conference opponent Binghamton University, the Wildcats were eliminated from the playoffs.
