‘Cats win home opener

DURHAM, N.H. – Graduate midfielder Graham Dougald (Charlottesville, Va.) scored the game-winning goal in the 55th minute, lifting the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Big East opponent St. John's on Thursday night at Wildcat Stadium.

UNH improved to 2-1-0, while St. John's dropped to 1-1-0. The victory marked the Wildcats' first-ever win over the Red Storm, evening the all-time series at 1-1-0.

Graduate midfielder Miguel Soto Gonzalez (Villanueva de la Cañada, Spain) opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Both Soto Gonzalez and Dougald netted their first goals as Wildcats.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

UNH struck first in the 24th minute when Soto Gonzalez finished a shot from 12 yards out into the lower-right corner of the net. Sophomore forward Xahvi DeRoza (Warwick, Bermuda) and junior forward Cabot McLaren (Sugar Hill, N.H.) were credited with assists on the play.

St. John's pulled even shortly after halftime. In the 47th minute, Travis Thompson converted a one-time finish from 12 yards out off a feed from Andrew Porucznik to make it 1-1.
Dougald delivered the decisive goal in the 55th minute, blasting a shot from 18 yards into the lower-right corner. Junior midfielder Lukas Kuca (Prague, Czech Republic) recorded the assist on the play.

The Wildcats' defense held firm over the final 35 minutes to secure the victory.
