KAPLAN SCORES 100th CAREER GOAL; WOMEN'S LAX UPENDS BINGHAMTON, 17-8

Kate Keagins (Bay Shore, N.Y.) tallied five points
and Shaunna Kaplan (Framingham, Mass.) recorded
her 100th career goal in the University of New Hampshire's 17-8
victory against Binghamton University in America East women's
lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.
UNH, which has won five of its last six games, improved to 9-4
overall and 3-1 in America East. New Hampshire's 1985 women's
lacrosse team was honored at halftime in recognition of the 25th
anniversary of winning the NCAA national championship; 13 of 18
student-athletes from that team, as well as head coach Marisa
Didio, were in attendance.
Binghamton lost its third consecutive game to fall to 1-11 overall
and 0-4 in the league.
Kaplan entered the game with 98 career goals and reached the
100-goal milestone with the second of her two goals in the game,
which gave the Wildcats an 8-3 lead at 4:34 of the first half. She
also had an assist for a total of three points.
Keagins finished with two goals and a career-high three assists for
a game-high five points; the UNH America East Player of the Game
also have a team-high five caused turnovers and one ground
ball.
Five other 'Cats netted multiple goals. JoJo Curro
(Amherst, N.H.) scored three goals -- and also had an assist --
while Allie Bratton (Windermere, Fla.),
Amber Casiano (South Windsor, Conn.),
Ilana Cohen (Andover, Mass.) and Allie Duclos (South Windsor, Conn.) each scored two goals.
Duclos was also credited with a career-high two assists to finish
with a personal best of four points.
Kate Gunts (Wilton, Conn.), in her first start
since March 9, made nine saves and that included six in the second
half. Curro, Kaplan and Jess Cassotis (York,
Maine) each recorded three ground balls while Duclos had a
team-high four draw controls.
Binghamton was led offensively by Beth Moore (4g) and Kimberly
McGeever (3a). Moore was credited with six ground balls, six caused
turnovers and three draw controls and was the Bearcats' America
East Player of the Game. Emily Miller played the initial 43:58 in
goal and exited the game with the Bearcats trailing 14-5; she made
six saves. Erin O'Donnell played the final 16:02 and also finished
with six saves.
New Hampshire quickly built a 3-0 lead with three goals in just
under two minutes. Casiano opened the game scoring at 28:09 on a
low shot from the left wing. A pair of Bearcats' failed clear
attempts -- BU committed 16 turnovers on 26 overall clear attempts
-- led to the next two UNH goals. Kaplan corralled a ground ball in
the offensive zone and drove down the left side of the fan for a
goal at 27:01. Moments later, a Keagins' stick check forced a
turnover along the right sideline. She quickly advanced the ball to
Jenny Simpson (New Canaan, Conn.) and her pass set
up Cohen's high shot that sailed into the goal at 26:12.
The visitors called time out at that point and scored three of the
next five goals to pull within 5-3. Liz Zuern, off a feed from
McGeever, scored the first of her two goals of the day to trim the
deficit to 3-1.
Duclos, on a free position from the top-left of the fan, fired a
shot into the upper-right corner to reestablish a three-goal
advantage, 4-1, at 18:07.
Moore lifted the Bearcats within two goals on a shot from the
top-left of the fan at 16:57, but UNH scored 70 seconds later to
extend the lead to 5-2. Keagins, who was awarded free position on
the top-right of the fan, quickly passed the ball low in front to
the cutting Simpson, who scored from close range.
BU's Kristen Stone scored on a high free-position shot from the top
of the fan at 14:06 to advance the score to 5-3.
UNH scored the next three goals to build an 8-3 advantage. A quick
sequence of passes set up Curro's goal at 11:52. From behind the
net, Simpson passed the ball to the right wing, where Kaplan
immediately found Curro in the middle of the fan for a 1-timer into
the net and a 6-3 lead. Duclos struck again at 10:15 when she
maneuvered from the middle of the fan to the right and then cut
back to the center before placing a high shot inside the right
post. Kaplan then netted her milestone 100th career goal at 4:34 on
a drive down the middle of the fan and a shot high on the right
side of the net.
Binghamton closed within 8-4 at 2:48 when McGeever set up Moore's
second goal of the game.
Ally Stager (Reading, Mass.) was awarded a free
position in the waning seconds of the first half and, from the
top-right of the fan, fired a shot inside the near post to give the
'Cats a 9-4 lead heading into halftime.
UNH scored the opening four goals of the second half to build a
13-4 advantage. Bratton collected a ground ball off BU's failed
clear and scored an unassisted goal at 25:18. The Wildcats scored
the next goal in transition as Keagins, on the top-right side,
moved the ball diagonally across the fan to set up Casiano's goal
from point-blank range at 20:57. UNH then pushed the lead to 12-4
when Cohen one-timed Duclos' pass from behind the net into the cage
and Bratton's second unassisted goal of the half capped the
four-goal spurt at 19:12.
Moore, once again on a pass from McGeever, made the score 13-5 at
16:43. Keagins converted Duclos' pass into a goal 41 seconds later
to push UNH's advantage to 14-5. Allie Sabitus cut from the left
side and doubled back to score a Bearcats' goal at 10:30 that
lifted the visitors within 14-6.
Curro scored an unassisted goal in traffic in the middle of the fan
at 8:20 and then set up Keagins' goal at 7:10 to give the Wildcats
a double digit lead, 16-6. Curro one-timed a pass from Keagins for
a goal at 1:55.
Moore and Zuern scored free-position goals in the last minute of
play -- at 28 and 14 seconds, respectively -- to close the
scoring.
UNH finished with the edge in shots (33-29), ground balls (24-19)
and draw controls (16-10) while also committing fewer turnovers
(30-32).
Simpson extended her point-scoring streak to eight games, which is
the longest active streak on the team. Kaplan has a point in six
straight and Keagins has scored a goal each of the last six games.
Bratton has scored two goals five of the last six games.
New Hampshire returns to action April 24 at home against the
University at Albany. The Senior Day game begins at 1 p.m.
