FORMER WILDCATS CONKLIN, WINNIK INK NHL DEALS

DURHAM, N.H.
– Two University of New Hampshire men's hockey
alumni recently signed professional contracts. Netminder Ty
Conklin (Anchorage, Alaska) and forward Daniel
Winnik (Mississauga, Ontario) inked NHL deals with the St.
Louis Blues and Phoenix Coyotes, respectively.
Conklin -- whose teams have reached the Finals in three of the
last four seasons (Edmonton, Pittsburgh, Detroit) -- signed a
two-year deal with St. Louis. Conklin (1998-01), a 2000 and 2001
Hobey Baker finalist and a two-time All American, left UNH with
eight goaltending records.
The 33-year-old appeared in 40 games for the Red Wings last season
and went 25-11-2 with a 2.51 goals-against average and six
shutouts. He'll share the goaltending duties with Chris Mason, who
won 27 games for the Blues and also posted six shutouts in
2008-09.
Winnik was awarded a one-year contract following of an arbitration
hearing. The 24-year-old left winger had three goals and four
assists in 49 games with the Coyotes last season. As a rookie with
Phoenix in 2007-08, Winnik had 11 goals and 15 assists in 79
games.
In 119 career games as a Wildcat, Winnik posted 37 goals and 58
assists for 95 points in his UNH career.In his final season at UNH,
Winnik finished ranking second on the team in scoring with a
career-high 41 points (15g, 26a) in 39 games. He was named a
Second-Team Hockey East All-Star and ranked tied for fifth in the
league in scoring.
