Reaves Breaks School Shot Put Record, UNH Wins Wildcat Invite

DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore Emma Reaves (Westminster, Md.) broke a school record and won two events to lead the University of New Hampshire women's track & field team to first place at the UNH Wildcat Invitational at the Reggie F. Atkins Track & Field Facility on Saturday.
Reaves broke her own UNH record in the shot put with a winning throw of 14.19 meters (46 feet-6.75 inches). She also won gold in the discus with a top mark of 46.73m (153-3). Combined with Friday's second-place finish in the hammer throw, Reaves earned a meet-high 28 points for her team to garner meet MVP status.
UNH won the six-team meet with 201 points and the 'Cats were followed by UMass Lowell (119 points) and Bryant University (114).
Junior Briana Danis (Hooksett, N.H.) finished third in the MVP rankings with 18 points – she won the hammer and was runner-up in the discus.
"I'm very happy with the women's and men's teams' performance today," said Anna Magle-Haberek, the UNH director of cross country and track & field. "We had two school records, many PRs, and brought home a win for both teams. Every individual fought hard for every point, second and centimeter. I'm excited to see them bring this energy to the conference championship meet."

Reaves led the shot put all six rounds following a mark of 12.53m on her first attempt. Already securely in first place on her last throw, she unleashed the record-setting mark of 14.19m.
Reaves went on to also win gold in the discus. She climbed to the top of the leaderboard in the second round with a distance of 46.15m, then bested that with her winning mark of 46.73m (153-3) on her third attempt.
Danis briefly led the discus with her opening mark of 45.63m (149-8) and she finished in second place. Sophomore Ruby Prentiss (Falmouth, Maine) advanced into the finals in fourth place and finished there with a throw of 38.09m (124-11) on her fourth attempt.
UNH had the two fastest runners in the 1,500m run. Freshman Juliana Sciortino (Niskayuna, N.Y.) was first across the finish line with a personal-best time of 4 minutes, 40.49 seconds and was followed by senior Ella Malone (Barrington, N.H.) at 4:43.91. Sciortino passed Malone in the last lap with a split of 1:12.45, which was the fastest 400m split by any of the 22 runners.
The Wildcats also took the top two spots in the 5,000m run. Sophomore Ruth White (Orono, Maine) pulled away from the field of seven runners with a time of 16:32.71. White ran each of her first 400m splits in the 1:18's, then was in the 1:19's for six of the next eight laps before finishing the final lap in 1:18.95. Classmate Bailey Hall (Yardley, Pa.) was in third place with 1,200m remaining but moved into second place with two laps to go and finished as runner-up with a time of 17:45.74.
Senior Makena Lee (Northwood, N.H.) topped the field of 12 competitors in the pole vault with by clearing a height of 3.55m (11-7.75). Lee cleared her first attempt of the meet at 3.25m and also passed 3.40m on the first try. The three remaining pole vaulters at 3.55m all missed on the first two attempts and Lee was the only one who cleared the bar on the last attempt to earn the win.
Grad student Autumn Agri (Stratham, N.H.) advanced to the finals of the triple jump out of the second flight and won the event with her top distance of 11.21m (36-9.5) in the second round.
Sophomore Mariam Nada (Portsmouth, N.H.) was the fastest sprinter in the 100m as she crossed the finish line in Heat 1 with a personal-best time of 11.92 seconds. Classmate Eva Roberts (Derry, N.H.) placed third in 12.36.
Sarah Moore (Lisbon, Maine), another sophomore, bested a field of 15 runners in the 200m with a personal-best time of 24.34 seconds in Heat 1.
UNH opened and closed the track events with victories in relay events.
Nada, Roberts and Moore combined with junior Audrey Thornton (Reading, Mass.) to win the 4x100m relay with a clocking of 46.74.
Thornton ran the anchor leg in the winning 4x400m quartet that included senior Liliana Chirichella (Troy, N.H.), grad student Kaitlin Lennox (Hampton, Falls, N.H.) and junior Jules Hickey (Pawling, N.Y.). Thornton was handed the baton three seconds behind the leader but ran a 400m split of 57.41 to cross the finish line first.
In addition to running in both winning relays, Thornton placed third in the long jump with a distance of 5.57m (18-3.25).
Senior Kristen Kirk (Augusta, Maine) was runner-up in the high jump by clearing a height of 1.65m (5-5) and freshmanTayla Pelletier (Windham, Maine) finished in a tie for third at 1.55m (5-1).
Pelletier raced to second place in the 400m hurdles with a personal-best time of 1:08.85.
UNH honored eight seniors before the start of the meet – Agri, Chirichella, Kirk, Lee, Lennox, Malone, Lauren Boilard(San Francisco, Calif.), and Delaney Hesler (Steep Falls, Maine).
The UNH women's track & field team returns to action May 9-10 at the America East Championships, which are at UMass Lowell.
